Also if I include a standard spec Commissar in one 10 man Infantry squad can I still combine the squads so I have 30 men in one unit with a Commissar in?

No to the first question, yes to the second.

Wow thanks for the quick reply. So Command Squads are best sat in a Chimera then to keep them safe? Haven't played with this army yet but bought stacks of stuff today and wondering how to kit them out etc to use as Allies first.

That's one way to do it. But having only one or two vehicles isn't great either unless most of your army is also meched up.

You can always hide the squad in the blob in a pseudo-blob, or just behind them, or behind terrain tossing out orders.

I usually put the PCS on a home objective off somewhere, or I give them 4 flamers and put them in a Flyer.

The latter tactic can be devastating, you can either drop them in front a rather annoying or squishy enemy unit like Pathfinders or Dark Reapers, and burn them to a crisp. 4 flamer templates generates aloooot of wounds, usually more than the opponent can save.

You can also put them on an objective far from your lines, hopefully in cover, and the flamers are great against assaults and can push off enemy scoring units.

Thanks for the ideas. Was looking at either 3 or 4 Infantry Squads joined as one unit with standard Commissar (and hoping for Platoon Command Squad to be joined as well, damn!) behind a Aegis Defense Line camping on any possible home objectives. But looks then like I'll have to just position this Command Unit just behind them still benefiting from the Defense Line cover save? I have got a Chimera to build but was looking at 4th or 5th Infantry squad to go in this to boost forwards. Does the entire Platoon have to deploy together as one or can I keep several units of it in reserve for example?

May as well go for a priest over a commissar. Unless you use gtg a lot.
Same points. Way more advantages.

Well, I will point out that the Commissar does enhance the unit's leadership which is important for passing orders.

I do agree that generally the Priest is better, but the Commissar isn't useless.

To be honest I didn't read the Ministorum Priest profile until just now as I liked the new Commissar figure they just released so purchased it with all my other stuff. Hmmmm decisions to be made now.

Good point. I overlooked that.

PCS in a Vendetta for late game objective grabs. 4x Flammers works good to clear off anything which may be in the way.
