Can someone explain to me the publishing history of this game?

Specifically, what is the relationship between the source books currently listed on GW's site and previous books?

I have a copy of a source book called Mordor that has a different cover than the one currently offered. Is the cover the only difference or does the Mordor book currently offered contain more information from some of the other, now OOP source books?

The new book features:

1. the updated warband rules for LotR SBG. This is identical to the information in the other four 2012 faction sourcebooks. It includes their six generic scenarios to play.
2. the stats and rules for all the Mordor models. I don't *think* there are any LotR Mordor models that aren't included, though I can't be sure
3. five thematic scenarios that include the book's faction. Some of these are nearly identical to ones in the three Lord of the Rings story sourcebooks, and some cover events that are in those but differently.
4. a table at the back of the book with a stats summary.

I'm not sure what models may be included in it that aren't in the 2007 book. The "named" Ringwraiths are in it. So is the Great Beast of Gorgoroth.

So, in summary the new book has the warband rules and competitive scenarios, the most up to date model rules that should cover the entire Mordor faction as released, and five story scenarios. It does not include anything else that may have been in the 2007 book, such as painting or hobby guides or what have you.

You're welcome! The closest the new book comes to hobby advice is a few pretty pictures. It does not feature any advice related to painting the miniatures or building terrain.

The closest to that in the five 2012 army books seems to be the Moria & Angmar book, which has a two-page spread with some pictures of certain Moria terrain features like doors, scaffolds or bridges and possible rules for them, but despite its note that "these pages contain rules and hobby advice" they do not actually appear to contain any hobby advice, unless you consider photographs of terrain features hobby advice. The Mordor book does not contain even that.

They are of a very different spirit to the original sourcebooks with their oodles of cool stuff.

So between having the 2007 Mordor book and the Hobbit core book, I suppose there's not much reason for me to get the new Mordor book. Thanks again for the heads up.

Yes, the warband ("points match") rules are pretty much identical - most of the text seems to be directly copied and pasted for the Hobbit rulebook, including the scenarios. So the only thing you are missing is the rules for whatever models weren't yet written in your book and the five narrative scenarios at the end. The Hobbit huge rulebook actually has some LotR scenarios, doesn't it? So you might even have those too if you have the gigantic book.

Basically the only differences are:
All the extra stuff that was added via WD is part of the Mordor Book proper (Knight of Umbar, The Dwimmerlaik, Kardush, etc)
We lost Black Numenorean Catapults and instead are limited to normal ones with crew that can be upgraded to Black Numenoreans.
