As the title says, so the game was. I've being trying to jump start the meta at Toys n Things in Danvers, MA for some time now, and have managed to get a few folks playing from time to time. I figured I'd try to document the learning process and do a few battle reports while I was at it! Be warned: the pictures are poor and the angles are bad (though I think they get better).

I've mostly been running Blindwater and Convergence at the store, finding them to be pretty straight forward and easy enough to learn against. For a change of pace I decided to take my Cryx out of storage for our Mercenary player's first foray into 35 points. What better way to appreciate a new point level than by playing the Dragonfather! In order to keep it simple we just played caster kill, and in order to keep it interesting, I ran Tier 4 Scavengers of the Line:

pAsphyxious
-Skarlock Thrall
-Cankerworm
-Harrower
-Seether
-Slayer
Necrotech & Scrapthrall x 3
Mechanithralls (10)
Necrosurgeon and Stitch Thralls

Tier Requirements/Benefits:
Tier 1- Limited Models = Mechanithralls get Advanced Deployment
Tier 2- Include Three Necrotech Solos= Reduce Slayer cost by 1 point
Tier 3- Include Cankerworm= Place an appropriately sized wreck marker with 20" of my board edge for each warjack in my battlegroup
Tier 4- Inckude Three or More Helljacks= +2 SPD for warjacks on my first turn

It's an odd list with a lot more 'jacks then any sane person would normally run at 35 points, along with the much maligned Seether (which I happen to love).

My opponent and her boyfriend have been assembling an array of models to fit both their needs, as she runs Highborne and he runs Cygnar (an ingenious plan, really, lost of overlap in basic units that both sides can use). Some of the solos were new this game, but a pretty flavorful list for a newer player. Her list was:

Ashlynn D'Elyse
-Mule
-Vanguard
eAlexia
Anastasia di Bray
Taryn di la Rovissi
Rutger Shaw
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages
-ATGM Officer
Long Gunner Infantry (6)
Steelhead Halberdiers (6)

DEPLOYMENT:
I won the roll and deployed first. The Seether deployed on the far right flank (really like mid-board, I deployed far left), followed by a necrotech, slayer, necrotech, Skarlock, Asphyxious, Necrosurgeon and stitch thralls, Harrower (with necrotech behind it) and finally the scrap thralls to the extreme peripheries to be distractions. Mechanithralls went on the left flank (AD'd beyond the small forest), with Cankerworm just to their left.
My opponent deployed Ashlynn close to her board edge, with some long gunners just ahead of her. The black primed models are the ATGM+Officer, with the Vanguard to my far right. To the left of the long gunners were Taryn+Rutger, the Mule, then the halberdiers with eAlexia behind them and Anastasia waiting in Ambush.

Turn 1
+ I give a focus to each of the jacks (save the Seether, he runs for free!). The Mechanithralls run up, spreading themselves around while the Necrosurgeon and her thralls work their way in to gather corpses. Harrower runs through the forest (that +2 speed first turn was big) hoping to get a shot on something next turn. Seether runs up to the rock at midfield, followed by the Slayer who hangs back a bit. Necrotechs all run to the Tier placed wreck markers to make some scrap thralls (hopefully), while the already existing scrapthralls run up the board edges. Gaspy and the Skarlock move up, Skarlock throws Scything Touch on the Mechanithralls.

-The photo of my opponent's first turn was lost (but the results can be more or less seen in my second turn photo). Two focus to the mule, one to the vanguard. The Long Gunners got Quicken and moved up, the ATGMs moved up onto the hill, the Vanduard ran up, the mule walked up and shot (harmless deviation), the halberdiers ran up with eAlexia walking up behind them. Taryn and Rutger stay between the long gunners and ATGMs, and Ashlynn walks up a bit.

Turn 2
+Two focus to the Harrower. Necrosuregon runs up to the rock, her thralls run up to near the halberdiers to collect some tasty, tasty corpses. Skarlock moves up, casts Scything Touch on the Mechanithralls again, and they walk into melee with the Halbs (avoiding the set defense bonus), taking two swings a piece. They take out five of the six, netting three corpses for the Surgeon! Cankerworm and Slayer move up, Seether edges across the big rock in the middle. Right side necrotech makes one scrap thrall out of a wreck marker (dead Halb acting as the stand in). Asphyxious moves up next to a wreck marker. Harrower makes a boosted shot at eAlexia, hitting her, but failing to kill her (leaves hit at four boxes). Scrap thralls run up the board again, (from right to left) next to the vanguard, on the hill by the ATGM, and into the wall between the Harrower and eAlexia.

-Ashlynn upkeeps Quicken and gives two to the Mule. Ashlynn moves up a bit and casts Admonition on the Mule. The lone Halberdier passes his command check and walks away from the Mechanithralls (bravely retreating, of course). ATGM stand still and shoot the Scrap thrall on the hill. Vanguard wanders over and kills the other scrap thrall, the explosion does no damage. The Long Gunners shift and pop shots at the mechanithralls, killing four. The Mule Steam Lobbers a shot at the Necrosurgeon, hitting her on boosted dice. She sacrificial pawns it off on a nearby mechanithrall. Blast damage kills a stitch thrall. Alexia hellfires the necrosurgeon but misses (which would have been very bad. Thank god she gets no souls from the undead!) Taryn tries a shot at the Seether but misses.

Turn 3
+Upkeep Scything Touch, two focus to Harrower. Harrower takes a boosted shot at Alexia. It misses. This would become a pattern for the Harrower the REST OF THE GAME *sigh*. Skarlock tries a hellfire. Misses. Finally, Cankerworm weasels his way up, misses on his first attach, but managed to hit her with the second! Dice come up well, and Alexia dies (feeding another corpse to the Surgeon). Using his Asphyxious affinity, he then gets out of the Mechanithralls way. The Surgeon moves up to replenish the mechanithrall ranks, then they charge the Long Gunners and Mule (who admonitons away, d'oh), with one tying up the halberdier. They manage to score one kill. Seether then walks up and kills another. Slayer follows behind him, with a necrotech just behind him. My far left scrap thrall runs and almost gets the Halb in melee. The newly created scrap runs onto the hill (noticing a pattern?). The middle necrotech makes four more scrap thralls (the variety of models you see in the middle of the picture). Asphyxious camps.

-Anastasia ambushes from behind my Seether. Quicken is upkept, Mule gets two. The mule tries a boosted Steam Lobber at the necrosurgeon, which deviates harmlessly. The Halb activates and kills the Mechanithrall blocking him. The Long Gunners either stab or double tap a lot of mecahnithralls to death, leaving the unit with one remaining. Anastasia walks up and tries to throwing knife the last stitch thrall, but it misses. Taryn and Rutger put some damage on the Seether, as do the ATGM. Vanguard walks up and swats the Scrap thrall that was in front of him, getting back into control range. Ashlynn decides to tempest the Seether for some reason, but it has no effect.

Turn 4
+Two focus to the Harrower, two to the Seether (with soul driven gives him three), two to Cankerworm, upkeep Scything Touch. Cankerworm activates, missed his first boosted attack against Anastasia. Second hits, puts her in the dirt, Surgeon gets a corpse. Harrower activates, walks up, tries boosted shooting at the Long Gunners. Misses terribly. Necrosurgeon moves up, creates three mechanithralls. Asphyxious feats, taking out a lot of Long Gunners with with POW 5 in his control area, throws a hell fire at a long gunner, killing him. They fail their command check. It also gorges the Necrosurgeon on corpses. Mechanithralls activate and charge the Mule/last remaining Long Gunner. Mule takes a beating, but I forget to combo strike, keeping him alive but ruining his cortex. Long Gunner survives on whiffs by the Mechanithrall. Skarlock activates and cycles Scything Touch onto the Seether. Seether activates, tramples over Taryn+Rutger, killing Rutger but missing Taryn. He's now standing next to Ashlynn. Buy+boost, hits! But does only Eight boxes. Slayer walks up, kills Taryn out of spite. Necrotechs run, one repairs the Slayer, and scrap thralls make a run for it.

-Two to Vanguard. Ashlynn activates, feats, and walks away from the Seether (thanks to Parry, no free strike), ends up behind the hill. Vanguard kills a scrap thrall, can't reach the other. ATGM shoot the other scrap thrall, attempt snipes at Gaspy and fail to hit/pass armor. Mule flails, Long Gunner attempts an attack, misses. (Photo is after my mechanithralls activated next turn, whoops!)

Turn 5
+Harrower gets two, Seether gets two, Scything Touch is upkept. Asphyxious moves to the edge of the rock (cause why not). Surgeon moves up, makes more thralls, who then activate and kill the Long Gunner and combostrike the Mule to death (model not removed in photo). Harrower takes a shot at the ATGM, is out of range, deviates harmlessly. Seether charges Ashlynn, taking a free strike (1 point of damage for the Gunmage Captain). Boosts to hit, misses, gets hit by riposte. Second attack is boosted and misses, he loses his right arm. Third attack misses (why did I bother on her feat turn?). Necrotech attempts to charge ATGM, misses. Slayer has a few whacks, takes one ATGM out. Scrap Thalls continue to run forward. Cankerworm heads towards the Mule's wreck to adapt himself a Steam Lobber!

-Ashlynn keeps all her focus, beats the Seether to death with a focus to spare. ATGM are mostly engaged, swinging at the Slayer and doing no damage, one shoots and kills a scrap thrall. The Vanguard walks up and puts a real hurt on the Slayer, knocking out his right arm.

Turn 6
+Three focus to Slayer, two to Harrower, one to Cankerworm. Necrotech repairs the Slayer, who proceeds to beat some sense into the Vanguard. Harrower takes a shot a misses the ATGM, it deviates no where. Surgeon makes more thralls, they charge the ATGM, who laugh at their MAT 5. Cankerworm adapts the Mule's Steam Lobber, throws a shot at Ashlynn which is short and deviates, taking out a mechanithrall (d'oh). Scrap thrall runs up behind the ATGM. Skarlock moves into position to Scything Touch the Slayer next round.

-3 Focus to the Vanguard. He tries to kill the Slayer, but rolls snake eyes on attack twice. Ashlynn moves and shoots the Scrap thrall in the back, the blast killing two gun mages. (No photo of this turn).

Turn 7
+Three to Slayer, three to Harrower. Harrower charges in and kills the Vanguard. Necrotech repairs the Slayer. Skarlock casts Scything touch on Slayer. Slayer then kills some gun mages. Surgeon makes more thralls, but is running out of corpses (unit is at full strength, however). Mechanithralls whiff, everyone else moves up.

-Ashlynn casts Admonition and moves. Shoots at the slayer and boosts damage, but no systems are taken out. ATGM flail, unable to hit/hurt the thralls.

Turn 8
+Three focus to Slayer, three to Harrower. Necrotech repairs Slayer. Skarlock gives Slayer Scything Touch. I can finish this now! Slayer charges Ashlynn, who admonitions away. Really. I forgot about Admonition. I wish I was kidding.Thankfully the Harrower gets in, boosts to hit, and finishes her off!

Overall, the game was a real blast. The tier list is wonky but fun. For being a newer player, my opponent made some pretty solid moves she really only got caught up by her lack of experience using multiple units and acting aggressively. I look forward to seeing her continue to progress as a player!

Nice report, thank you for including pictures too, battle reports are always so much better with pictures.

Only thing I wanted to point out was in your opponents list, she has to choose between the Gun Mages OR the Long Gunners, can't have both. This is currently bugged in War Room (if anyone was looking to that to confirm) but I am hopeful with the changes coming in 1.4 with Mercenary contract listings it will get fixed.

Ah, this makes much more sense. I thought it was odd she could take both, but of course I used Warroom. Ah, still a fun game!
