I'm not sure if this is better suited to the painting and modelling section, but it's more about 40k players' opinions, and less about making things.

I plan to scratch build some Manticores for my IG regiment. However, not only do I not like the quad-missile design for the 'core, but it'll be a pain in the ass for me to do convincingly.
So, the best solution I can come up with is to make some form of skywards-facing cannon. The model design is going to be pretty unique, so it'll be impossible to mistake for another vehicle.

In a friendly, non-tourney game, would you find this acceptable (assuming there is not GW-only rule in place)? All opponents will, ofc, be told before deployment what they are.

As long as you say what it is and it's a friendly game I'd be fine.

Just be careful about MFA (Modeling for advantage), I doubt it would be a problem with as long of a range as the manticores. Otherwise go nuts, just remember to post pics of it here on dakka for the rest of us to see and admire.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

I all for custom job and love seeing them on the table. As long as it's true to the manticore profile and easily destinguishable, I say go for it.
Post pics when you finish!

The enemies of Mankind may employ dark sciences or alien weapons beyond Humanity's ken, but such deviance comes to naught in the face of honest human intolerance back by a sufficient number of guns.

Mmm... that's pretty shaky. I mean, you can always proxy stuff, but a manticore really, really shouldn't look like a basilisk or a wyvern. It's a missile system, not an artillery piece, and given that there are other artillery pieces, there would probably be confusion.

I mean, what you're asking is basically if you can use a basilisk to represent a manticore. Yes, you can, but it's not really a conversion, it's a proxy.

If you want an easier way to scratchbuild a manticore, I'd go for this design:

I mean, all you'd need to do is make a box out of plasticard, and then put four little squares on the front to represent the doors where the missiles fly out of.

You could get more complicated than that, of course, but it would look much more like a box o' missiles that fires missiles, than a giant cannon that fires missiles for some reason.

When I've made the cannon, I'll post back here so you all can get a look at it

Now I just need to wait for the plasticard to arrive.

Perhaps the cannon can have a revolver drum to explain how it fires so quickly but takes so long to reload?

It's an airburst daemonically-possessed mortar shell

I actually have a page of fluff written for it...

If it looks good and Warhammery, and you have written a bit of fluff for it; I would be very happy to play against it.

You know, maybe if you made it a 4-barrel mortar, one for each shot.

Crap, except then it would REALLY look like a wyvern.
