So I bought the DC starter set and the Company Master comes equipped with a power sword. I bought a lot more guy for a larger army as well as DA codex and noticed that company masters don't have power swords, they have chain swords. I want to use the company master in my overall army but I want to make sure I am using the correct codex info for it.

Do I follow the reference sheet that came with the DV set or do I change it to follow the codex info?

The base unit entry in the codex has power armour, a bolter/pistol and a chainsword (and grenades) in the base cost. He may then take items from several wargear lists, and you will find the PS in the melee items list for 15 points. So the PS model is fine, so long as you pay the extra 15 points.

So when it says power weapon, this covers anything that has power in its name? And I would need to pay extra for him?

Same question but with the Librarian this time. I cannot seem to find info on force weapons in the codex

Yes, power weapon can be an axe, sword, maul or lance (but not a fist). You pay the extra cost listed, in this case 15 points.

The Libby is a little different as he has the force weapon in the base cost, so you pay no extra, but still choose the type of weapon. The rules for force weapon are in the main rulebook.

Okay, this helps a lot. Looks like I am going to need to purchase a lot of weapons/armor to accurately reflect what my guys in DV came with

Ahh thanks a bunch for this. I am most of the way through reading the rules right now. About to start reading about chariots

In fairness that's no bad thing. A company master needs at least a power weapon to be useful.

Trying to make sense of all the pieces I have right now lmao, ended up with 3 DV DA armies, Ravenwing Battleforce, 2 Rhinos, 1 Razerback and a bunch of converted marines from BR

Making my army list while I read through the rules, I'll probably come back with questions later on,

Like for instance what does it mean when a Dedicated Transport doesn't take up a slot?

Haven't come across that yet in rulebook

Dedicated Transports are on pages 78 and 109 of the rulebook - basically they don't fill a box in the Force Organization Chart (also on page 109) and only the unit you bought it for can start the game in it.

I see. Haven't hit page 109 yet. About to read about terrain.

Question, do I need to have all the terrain cause trees are gonna be a pain in the butt. I'm home making a whole bunch of random stuff and just throwing the rules for what they are, i.e., covers saves and such into them.

Used a koolaid mix container to symbolize trees lol.

Oh this reminds me of another question.

Me and my friend were playing our first game the other day and one of his shots, the angle of it went through both a clump of trees and a pile of sandbags to target the units behind it.

How does multiple terrain things like this affect targeting, los and cover saves?

You don't have to have a selection of all possible terrain - you might have a board full of ruins but with no swamps / forests / hills etc.

Multiple cover saves don't generally affect much, you only get the best save (so, say the shot passed through a forest (5+) and is obscured by a ruin (4+) you take the 4+). It will only matter occasionally (some units can remove a single type of cover save for example). Line of Sight is still the same - you need to be able to see it to target it (except Barrage weapons etc.).

Okay so we can assume that his units can see through the trees and aim at the units ducking behind cover?

Gonna need to stop using koolaid containers then

Terrain on my home table was as simple as a piece of paper torn into an odd shape with “Swamp, difficult ground, 5+ cover” written on it. In an ideal world, you have all sorts of cool custom pieces. In a practical one, you use what you have.

I think we all have used stacked books for hills at one point.

So I just finished reading about building. Can someone give me an example of how I would go about attacking a building with enemies in it. Resolving hits on the building, etc

Also, there doesn't seem to be an HP for buildings that I have come across so far

Long story short:
- People from the inside don't attack (save firing overwatch)
- People from the outside attack the building itself; a glance causes a singe AP- hit on the unit, a pen causes a hit and a roll on the building damage table. Thus, buildings don't have HP.
- After the combat, they are considered to have charged a vehicle (can be shot at as normal, but count as being in combat again in the assault phase).

Bonus:
- A grenade causes D6 (blast) or D3 (single hit) hits on the people inside a building, as well as hitting the building itself once.
- A flamer template causes D6 hits on the people in the building, as well as hitting the building itself once.
- When attacking battlements, change D3 to 1 and D6 to D3.

Thought you could hit the guys on top of the buildings?

You can choose to use grenades against the people on top, but not strike them with melee weapons. Page 96 "Assaulting the Battlements."

But I can shoot at them though?

I know to assault I need to be on the floor right under them if it has multiple levels or next to a ladder leading to the top from the outside.

Ah, right, sorry, misunderstood your question.

Models on a battlement are not inside a building. They can be shot at just like normal troops provided you have line of sight to them.

Shooting from a battlement, if you can see over cover, for example sand bags, do they still get a cover save even though your unit could reasonable have a clear shot?

Cover is determined from the firer's eyes (or barrel of the weapon if a vehicle), so a firing model's head is often above the battlements and so the crenelations probably won't give the enemy a cover save. Likewise if a bastion elevates your model enough so you can see over the sandbags then they don't get a cover save. Terrain that's not Forests actually needs to block 25% or more of the firer's LoS to give a model a cover save.

Will also mention that most of the time (unless it's a strict tournament or you're playing with a real [expletive]) your army doesn't need to be 100% accurate. Especially for HQ choices that can get all kinds of wargear options. You might want to change it up between games, and some options don't even have anything on the sprue to accurately represent them. As long as you make it clear that "my chapter master has a power axe today" most people won't mind.

That said, magnets can be your friend. As a Tau player who has battle armor with all kinds of weapon options I have gotten very familiar with using magnets.
