So this game has point values? It's not all about wiping out the enemy completely?

I prefer the domination but points sound fun.

How do they all work?

Nothing more fun than tabling an opponent

Yes, units have a cost in points.

How you win a game is determined by what mission you're playing.

5 out of 6 of the Eternal War missions (the ones that come in the rulebook and are the most common for pick-up style games) use at least one objective. You're missing out on huge wedges of tactics (IMO) if you're just playing Purge all the time.

Placing objectives is explained on page 121, and objectives themselves are explained on pages 122 (Primary and Secondary objectives explained), 123 (how to capture objectives) and 125 (mysterious objectives that might explode in your face!). Which missions use them and how many objectives are in each are explained in the mission pages (126-131).

He probably meant victory points...but your answer stays same of course

Also, in book missions, you can completely ignore the objectives, or at least give them just enough attention to force the game to be determined by secondaries.

If you want to just slog it out and see who dies first, you can. You don't need to play the book missions. However, they're a lot more balanced and fun than "kill everything" which kind of lacks a lot of the tactical challenges playing around objectives does.

This

I played a guy at the club this week, battered him, seriously, I had two daemon princes, a Bloodthirster and a squad of
Flesh Hounds with a Herald in his deployment zone by the end of my first turn, all on one flank, and terrain and his deployment meant he struggled to bring very much to bear in retaliation on his first turn.

Needless to say, I grabbed first blood, and maintained linebreaker for the final turn, but he managed to sneak in Slay The Warlord, which I didn't (pesky MSS) then, final turn, he manages to grab the relic with his last squad of Immortals, winning the game 4-2

Had that been KPs, or a simple stand up fight, I'd have been the uncontested winner, as it was, I lost because I got so carried away with the prospect of tabling him, I was incautious with my scoring units, and ended up losing them. A lesson learned in my part, even after all this time, but by playing to the objective, my opponent literally pulled victory from the jaws of defeat.

I have two hoard armies (Orks and IG) and fine it very hard when using victory points. I normally have 3x the number of points on the table than my regular oponant and my units tend to be far more squishy. Meaning I pretty much have to table him. Trying to Table Eldar isn't easy!
