If this has already been discussed, pardon me.

I went through the GW web store looking for prices on goodies and notice the volume of items out of stock. Seems they didn't make enough models to keep up with demand. Is this army really that hot?

They've been supremely broken for at least as long as 8th edition ruleset has been out right? And 8th dropped in 2010....

I've heard some great things about what they've got, but I don't know enough about WHFB to make a judgement call.

What? Maybe you're thinking of HE or DE. WE just now got an army book update, the first in nearly 10 years. They were never a broken army, and appear to be well balanced like the rest of the 8th edition books.

I really hope the WE stuff is sold out. GW only cares about the bottom line, so that is pretty much the best possible thing that could happen to WE.

People have been anticipating Wood Elves for a long while with a good number of people saying things along the lines of "I love the way Wood Elves look but I heard they have a weak book right now. I'll wait." Now that they got their update, their popularity skyrocketed.

I think it's safe to say GW underestimated the demand and possibly the popularity of the Wood Elf army. Which is strange since they were a very popular army from what i've been told when they were last released (back in 6th edition). I for one am glad that Wood Elf players got a new book and that it's doing well. Lord knows they deserve it.

ToW armies I own:

Chaos Legions: DoC- 10,000+; WoC- 7,500+; Beastmen- 2,500+; Chaos Dwarves- 3,500+

When an army goes unupdated for 10+ years the people who played it tend to move on to a different army. Now that it's gotten a new book they've come out of the wood-work (ehhh? ehhhhh?)

So not only do you have the people who used to play them buying new models, but the people who've wanted to play them for a while now have an excuse and of course it has shiny & new syndrome so you've got bandwagoners. Dark Eldar went through the same thing & I imagine brettonians will as well.

Friend of mine has been saying for the last year or two that "well, if I were to play Fantasy, I'd play WE." without really showing that drive to start playing it (he does play 40k.)

When this update came along, he made a 1500p army and ordered all the models for it on the second week of releases.

People have been waiting for this.

Doesn't surprise me. It was the same with Tau in 40k. They went, just like Wood Elves have done, from a rarely-used army in need of an update to a very popular army with a strong book. Granted, 40k is more popular and Tau's book was stronger, so fair play to the Wood Elves!

The Magic arrows are pretty outragously awesome, however it has its weaknesses. Very expensive and fast moving monsterous any type of unit. ogres, dragon ogres, crypt horrors, etc. When taken in moderate doses will be thier weakness.

I meant they were broken as they were nearly unplayable without a new book

Their latest stuff is pretty formulaic. They joined the studio system, and now they suck. Tomb Kings man, they are an army that remained true to themselves! That's why nobody bought their latest album I guess, but they were legit man, legit.

Most of the wood elf stuff that is sold out, is pewter, so I have 2 thoughts on the matter.

A) They are going to switch to finecast but do not want to do it right away so that people don't get pissed off about just buying the pewter models.

B) With the new GW release schedules in months ahead, we may see 1 or 2 new models sets every once and a while. Kind of like how we didnt see a non box set hellbrute for about a year and a half after the codex.

Have no fear nathan2004 you can still get the limited edition.

I am hoping that with how slow this is selling that people are over these and they stop trying to bank on Lim. Edition stuff.

Not only online most of the shops Ive visited have had all their wood elves out of stock. I managed to grab a box of glade guard literally right as they hit the shelf, the wood elf section was again empty after I got it.

Can we talk about how this is still going on a month later. I don't mind proxying models to use this army, but its becoming a little bit ridiculous at the stores I am playing at..

More Proxy units on the table than actual units.

Either GW severely under estimated wood elf sales, or something sketchy is going on.

I'm thinking that we're seeing the last of the metal stock selldown and then we'll see a few more plastic kits.

Waywatchers/Deepwood Scouts really would be a perfect kit.

That would be a nice kit to see, I am just concerned about how long it going to take to see it, and the fact that they continue to say temporarily out of stock makes me think we may just see resin kits.....

I feel this business move is going to hurt them slightly if they do not wait long enough.

Personally though I like the current Waywatchers, if they were just resin......I would really like to see new Wardancers though, I am not a fan of them

From what I have been able to ferret out, the reason we keep seeing "Temporarily Out of Stock" is that they are going through their warehouses and finding what's left.

I can't see them leaving the Wood Elf line in such sorry shape considering so many of the characters are metal, they still have several metal units, and more annoyingly they are missing a "plastic lord on mount" kit.

I could actually see a way for a triple kit of Waywatchers, Wardancers, and Deepwood Scouts though.

They have been updating a lot of the models to resin. I am kinda disappointed but a lot of the models I wanted metal versions of are unavailable as I predicted.

Remember the person I was talking about in this quote? He ordered from Wayland Games on launch, and they just despatched the models yesterday.
My theory was that GW intentionally under produced so that they could prioritise their own shop first and then go "well, sorry third party sites, but there is nothing more for us to send you at the moment."
That way the third party sites would get a reputation of not being able to deliver until long after launch, making more people order from the official GW site.

... but it seems even the GW site was having trouble providing from the beginning? If that's so, then it's just a massive cock-up by GW.

People that would have bought a lot of different units have now playtested through proxy and will know what units to get. That means less sales.

The latest 40k ork model went from resin to plastic, so I think we're seeing a shift in the way thing are going down the road.

I can't speculate on what's going on with the WE stuff (future plastic, resin or what), but GW is clearly dropping the ball. They should have planned for this.

GW never plan for this, everytime they update a so called "niche army" they understock severely.
It started with DE was followed by Tau, is now happening to WE, and likely to repeat whenever the brets and/or sisters update.
GWs lack of focus testing has and will continue to catch them with their pants down, and having to wait for a new run of books/models to be made is a lenghtly logistical nightmare for them.
