I collect and don't play. I use to play, but I found that 5th edition was so boring to play, that I basically quit and just collect plastic crack. I model slowly and paint even slower.
For me 40K is just a very bad horrible boring game. My opinion, I am not right or wrong. Not trying to insult anyone here. You may love the 40K game, but I don't. So I just collect the minis and like reading the fluff and setting.

Of my circle of friends I know.. 10 or so guys and of us 1 almost exclusively paints (has started playing warmachine now that we are picking that up, before that I hadn't seen him play).
Other than that I have models I buy just to paint and collect, and the percentage of models I get for that purpose is raising, but still no more than 50/50.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I collect Infinity figures (which I really like) but I don't play. I'm still learning Warmachine.
Once I get the hang of that I'll get busy on Infinity.
So I guess I collect but don't play, but I have the intention to?

I stopped playing 15 years ago, and every so often I'll strip and repaint a bunch of minis. I have three Blood Bowl teams and the first Terminators boxed set left to repaint before I start work on any of my remaining Space Marine squads.

I do. I am a fan for the fluff and the details. Like any hobbyist collector I collects to create and paint my version of my favorite legion. Gaming is secondary stuff to me at the moment though I would at some point learn to play

I played 1 game of 6th, 3 games of 5th, 0 games of 4th, 0 games of 3rd and about 12 games of 2nd.
I work full time including saturdays and the only place to play is my local GW so I pretty much never get chance to play.
I have been buying, building, and then changing my mind and selling armies for about 19 years now and the last time I had a painted army was in 3rd.
I've had every army at one point except for Space Wolves.
I currently have about 3000pts of Sisters unpainted, 4000pts of Guard part built, 3000pts Grey Knights unopened and a half assembled 3000pt Deathwing army.

I collect miniatures for games I don't play usually because I like the way a particular model or model range looks, but I either am not interested in learning a new game or can't find players.
Wargods of Aegyptus is a great example of that sort of game. I really liked Wargods' models but couldn't find another player within 40 miles who played the game. Not wanting to go without such awesome miniatures I built three armies and kept them in display cases for a few years and marveled at all of the lovely details present on the models. That was good enough for me until space became an issue and I sold the armies off. Recently I got the urge to re-build an army because I missed the models but I really have no desire to play the game.
I also do the same for Crimson Skies. Played the game years ago when FASA was still a game company but now I just buy, paint and display the models. The game is dead, and while I certainly could keep playing with my old rules book, I get much more enjoyment out of the models than actually playing.

I convert and paint primarily, have for nearly 20 years. Haven't played a game of 40k since third edition, but then again haven't bought a mini in about a year.
Only people to play with would be a buddy that isn't into the game any more from burnout, and if I can get the wife to play but she is worried about the complication of the rules because she is not a big gamer.
Hoping to actually get a game or two of Epic Armageddon in soon, as I recently got interested in it.

The thing is that games workshop is too expensive compared to the companies out there making real collectable models. A scale 75 (4 times the wise of a marine), solid metal bust costs less than a land raider by GW prices so, as a collector, the only reason to buy GW is for the fluff/aethetics, and even then I wouldnt buy anything like a whole army.

Some of us were also big into 40K back when it was affordable. My two Land raiders are from back when they were released. They were NOT 75 dollars back then.
The 30 metal warriors in my Necron army came from back in the day when they were less than 10 dollars for a pack of three.
Back in the late 90's and early 2000's you got a ton of back for your buck with 40K. For example, metal Dreadnoughts for 29.99. Tactical squads for less than 30 dollars.

I've never known anyone who hasn't at least tried the game once, but I definitely have known a couple of people who didn't really care to play and just wanted to collect and paint. I'm actually getting to that point myself, just because I find painting to be relaxing and, as I've gotten better at it, enjoyable.

I stopped playing regular games shortly after the Third War for Armageddon world wide campaign and last played during the Thirteenth Black Crusade world wide campaign so, eleven years ago or so now.
My hobby is making models and reading the novels/background although, with the prices GW are charging for Codexes these days I only have three of them where once I bought all of them just so I could read the background; I will make an exception for a nice hardback Codex: Orks though whenever that eventually comes out.
These days I spend a fair bit of time browsing eBay for old Rogue Trader minis just so's I can paint an army up. I do always intend to play again so, I like to keep the armies legal but quite often I just make models I think look cool and fit with the background even if they have no place in the game.

I spent probably a year collecting and painting 40k before I found people to play with. I wanted to have a fully painted army so I wouldn't be "that guy" who fielded grey models but it turns out that half the guys at my FLGS field unpainted or two-color models anyways.
