Looking to start painting and playing again. Starting from scratch so i have all options open.
What i'm looking for is an army with some very very tough units. Those units that the opposing player really hate trying to kill. I'm thinking some kind of MEQ or an army with lot of good invul saves to help keeping models on the board and then those tarpit units that will last for an entire game.
I'm not a big fan of tanks but do like dreadnaughts.
So, can you sweet and kind players help with narrow down some choices so i don't have to buy each and every codex. Oh, easy to paint is a plus as i'm not the best modeller

Best or worst competitive army doesn't matter as long as it fits my style of play and i can paint them somewhat easy

You could do a Iyandan Army.

Wraithknights and wraith guard in wave serpents. That could be fun to play.

Something like

Farseer on bike
3x spiritseer
6x jetbikes
3x 5 man wraith guard in wave serpent
2x WraithKnights

Also most of the army is plastic and all the models in it are really sweet looking IMO

Quick mock up 1850 list. Depending on what 6th does it would obviously need some changes but it would give you a nice tough army. Everything has a 3+ save or better. T6 base as well as durable transports.

Protected, fortuned Wraithblades with axes sneer at just about anything you can throw at them.

In the new edition you'll have to choose between either fortune or protect however.

Excuse my ignorance, but those are Eldars, right?
Eldars are a psyker-heavy army as well? That would also be a big plus

Yep, Spiritseers and Farseers are some of the most powerful psykers in the universe.

Just looked at the models and they do have some pretty sweet-looking ones.
What are the quick pro/con list of Eldar and, in general, can they be build to take a beating? But without knowing what the models can do i already like them hehe

IG. Hard to beat the durability of 50 conscripts for 150 points, especially if you buff them. They'll die in droves, but the unit will live on and do it's job ; p Plentiful AV14 for what, 120+ points now isn't half shabby either.

Necrons are more "durable" as such though imo. You can't keep a good (psychopathic evil?) 'bot down! Silver tide relies on lots of bodies that while fairly tough, also get up again if they do die thanks to reanimation protocols, res orbs and ghost arks. They have other durable units such as wraiths in fast attack and lots of AV13, some really cheap like the annihilation barge. (Though after the first penetrating hit it drops down to av 11). Also plentiful flyers which are hard to kill, especially in numbers.

Chaos can be pretty durable with amazing nurgle bikers, helturkeys.... that's about it really. But you can make other stuff work ; p

20 Necron warriors with a resorb and ghost ark in some good cover are staying on that damn table so long as they don't get completely wiped out in one go.

The Tomb Citadel and some Apocalypse formations can also further buff their durability.

I find Tyranids to be quite durable. T4 W3 4+ in their troops, T6 W6 3+ in the majority of their MCs bring problems to me. Unless you focus fire (or have a lot of S8 plates), they'll take forever to die

Nurgle themed CSM is about as hard to kill as it gets.

Plague marines are T5, feel no pain, fearless marines with poisoned weapons, defensive grenades and access to 2 special weapons even at 5 men. Very annoyingly, a plague marine squad seems to be able to stand up quite ok to a terminator squad in close combat. And they can be taken as troops, i.e. scoring units that are annoyingly hard to shift.

Nurgle bikers or Spawn at T6 are also very hard to get rid of.

I have done a Nurgle themed army where everything was T5 or higher. Worked pretty well to be honest, but Nurgle is the best CSM theme at the moment.

Outside of the iyandan themed units and vehicles they are very fragile and a finesse army. Pro is that they tend to be very manueverable and they have a lot of good buffing and enhancing psychic powers.

Nurgle CSM is a lot of fun, I have an army but it is hard to say because there are so many changes coming with the edition it is hard to know how things will fare.

Tyranid monstrous creatures are pretty good, but you still are going to need a lot of little guys on the table to help fill it out.

Necron warriors are pretty durable and good, unless they get assaulted since they are pretty easy to sweep.

Given that you say you want tough units and easy to paint, I would really recommend Tyranids.

You can easily field an entire army of multiple wound creatures, which is both 'tough', and easier to paint than a lot of smaller models. In addition, because Tyranids are biological organisms, you can paint them almost any way you want, and you don't have to worry about 'correct markings' or decals or unit markings or small bits of decoration/equipment like grenades, purity seals, ammo packs, etc.

So long as you like the models, I think Tyranids would fit your criteria best (not exclusively, but best IMHO).

I'd go for Eldar Wraiths. Nothing like a army with nothing but T6 and T8 (not counting Spiritseer).

Thank you for your suggestions. Probably not the best choice in regards to my playstyle. But i can't stop thinking about how much i'm looking forward to paint some Eldars. Fell in love with the psykers and ranger models and the rest are growing on me.
Thank you all for your input. I would never have given eldar models a closer look if you didn't suggest it.

Sorry...didnt see this before I posted. Excitement about an army should definitely be criteria #1.
