Anyone got the rulebook yet?

I imagine some of you have, noticed how many pages are wasted on photographs of miniatures?

I seriously hope I'm not the only one pissed off that I will have paid extra for a book separat to the marketing material and fluff, and still have to cart around marketing material.

It does feel a little like "We've listened to your complaints. The rules are now a separate book (you still have to buy all of them, but at least you get a nice thin book to carry around!"

I love looking at well painted miniatures.

More pictures is always a good thing, especially if the pictures are used to illustrate something pertinent in the rules.

If that is actually the case, then the prosecution has no further questions, your honour.

In all honesty I have only ever seen one person own one of the large hardback rulebook from 6th Edition.

So I suspect most people will wait for a new A5 copy and just ignore the rules or pickup the key bits from batt-reps.

Can you explain the spread in the shooting phase?

I don't mind diagrams, or pictures used to illustrate the point; if I want t look at well-painted miniatures I (won't, since they're usually mediocre these days) will look at the other book, full of painted miniatures I paid 140 bucks for.

It's an optional book and has nothing really needed in it. If you don't like it, then just don 't buy it.

No. I don't have it. So neener-neener.

As for the spread, why are you angry that a company that makes money selling miniatures throws in a few pictures of miniatures?

Yep. Ads in all of them. Nothing new here, folks.

The book OP is talking about is the one with just pictures of the miniatures in it, it doesn't have any rules.

So the rules

I'm talking about the rulebook that's full of pictures of models that waste space that I bought as part of a pack of 3, paying 16 dollars extra so I didn't have to carry around the waste of time miniatures book that I bought nonoptionally as a pack of three.

Are we looking at the same pages then? Becuase it strikes me that you're oblivious for no reason.

Have a look at the shooting phase of the rulebook, the section that tells you to roll to hit. This is what I'm complaining about. It's not even a small image to fill space, it wastes a good full page.

Just rip out the extra pages. I remove everything that isn't a or pertaining to a rule.

How does one rip out a spread like the one I referred to without removing actual rules?

There was such virtue in this idea, and it's all been wasted.

Huh? For what's worth. Gw will charge you the same price even if they don't waste pages on pictures. So you got the better deal.

I got the worse deal. I want my rulebook as small as possible. What're a few pictures of their paintjobs worth to me?

I would've been okay paying more getting less as long as less means less fluff

That's because you were wrong when you told me what the OP was talking about. He was talking about the rulebook. It's one of the three books you get when you buy the pack that also includes the other two books that you would THINK has ALL the useless stuff, but then they went and put it in this one TOO.

wufai wrote:

No. More pages doesn't make it a "better deal." It makes it more bloated.
If I were to sell you a 1kg bag of rice and fill it up with another kg of my own feces for free, it wouldn't be a better deal. It would be rice smeared in my droppings.

How is it hard to understand what Scipio is saying? The books were split into 3 because players don't like carrying around more than is necessary to games, or flicking through non-rules trying to find the rules they need. The rulebook still contains non-rules, defeating the purpose of splitting the books into 3.

I don't care as such since I'm not buying it for many reasons, but what he's saying is simple and straight forward - and a reasonable complaint about the product.

Then wait 2-3 months and get the starter set rulebook they are making for Dark Vengeance off ebay.

Or just keep griping about absolutely nothing. That's fun, too.

Layout sometimes requires images breaking up the text to make it easier to read. Without pictures, it's easy to get 'lost' in large blocks of text, especially when you aren't reading it in a linear fashion but instead are hunting for individual fragments which give you the information you need. If nothing else, the images act as visual landmarks which will help you remember where to look.

Speaking of layout, I recall Alan Blighe saying in an interview back when one of the IA books came out (Badab War I or II, maybe) that the printer that GW and FW use require 16-page bundles, which is factored into what they can and can't include. He went on say that they had 3 or 4 special missions they had to scrap because of this.

So if you're 3 pages into a 16-page bundle, do you cut 3 pages of rules and examples, or do you add 13 pages of pictures and ads?

They managed it perfectly in the A5-booklet without cluttering it up. I'm not buying this excuse.

From what has been rumored, the replacement DV book isn't going to be a full rulebook. It's just going to have rules for the stuff in the box. No vehicle rules, etc.

Maybe if the rules section had less pictures they could have lowered the price? Maybe GW could have found other places to cut and save money?
