Hi all,

I currently have a case and tray system for sale (see my sig) and want to expand into making Warmachine trays. I am a 40k player and I know absolutely nothing about Warmachine so I have a few questions.

How many models are there in regular sized games?

Which models are mostly used?

What type of options, storage wise would you look for in trays designed for Warmachine?

There are most likely questions I have missed but feel free to ask anything and I will do my best to answer.

I look forward to making these trays for you.

Cheers!

It varies wildly.

There is so much variety in a normal game you'd never be able to peg down a typical number.

Anyway, there are 4 base sizes. 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 120 mm.

If you look at other companies who make Warmachine trays, they typically have 20-30 30mm holes, a dozen or so 40mm, 8-12 50mm, and 2 120mm. With some of the smaller holes being inside the larger base holes.

Thats what I'd want anyway. You'll always have the lists which have 50 30mm models in a game or those which have less than a dozen total models.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

It also depends alot on the faction. For example Trolls have alot of medium bases. (40 mm)

The factions in warmachine are very deep. most are approaching 100 individual options. Freedom in list building adds to the diversity. You are not going to be able to make a basic "warmachine bag" and have it cover even most needs. It will have to be up to the customer to build the loadout best for them and you to supply the trays they need. Your probably going to need to get acquainted with the game enough to understand what people are carrying around and why.

Infantry units come in many sizes from 3, 6, and 10 and some times have up to five models that can attach. How many of each size (30mm and 40mm) one will need will change depending on faction and preference. The trollblood faction has many 40mm based models and few 30mm based models while cygnar and retribution have very few 40mm based minis in their lineups.

The game uses a lot of solo characters. You may not have many in a particular list but I expect anyone with a good collection to have a dozen or so. Mercenaries can make that number jump way up.

Heavies and lights vary from collection to collection but you MUST have at least one in every list so you won't get by without some kind of tray for large models. This is especially true since cavalry are making a bit of a comeback.

Trays that can hold legion and skorne warbeasts would be a good product. Some factions have very awkwardly-shaped models. Including pockets for magnetized weapons/arms/heads on a heavy tray would be useful. Likewise, colossal and/or battle engine trays that are not battlefoam would be a great for people looking for options. I have to use a sabol 4" tray with an inverted 3" tray on top to hold two of my three colossals. For many of the larger and awkward models you might have to find someone to let you get measurements in person then adjust for whatever extravagant basing someone may add.

Are you looking to provide a case for people to transport what they are hoping to play for the day or a full collection storage solution? some wm/h collections are as large as apocalypse-level 40k collections.

But is that enough ? How many trays would people need if they consisted of 30x30mm 10x40mm and 4x50mm ?

For 40mm inside a 50mm circle? How many of those would be needed for trays?

Thanks for feedback

I'd want to make generic trays first and then branch out after.

If I made a tray with 30mm cylinders within 40mm cylinders this should solve the problem. Would 30 per tray be enough?

How tall are colossus's? My case is only 140mm high. I do like the idea of cylinders cut into pick and pluck foam and will be something I will get made.

I'm making it to do both but I am in the process of getting smaller casses made to hold 5 trays which should be enough for normal games. However I don't play warmachine and want to get to grasps with the number of models needed for a typical game.

Thanks for all feedback guys!

would it be possible to make some kind of tiered tray, almost like a mini set of shelves. I have seen these around and it would be nice to know where they come from/buy one from you.

As for the huge base situation, in a 3 list format it isnt uncommon to have 2 huge bases. Becomes less of a space issue if each huge base slot can also hold 2/3 50mm slots aswell. Slots within slots kinda thing

Reading back over this thread I think there is some confusion. Half the replies are made under the impression that the OP is talking about wood tournament trays and the other half is presuming he is planning to make foam trays for transport bag.
