I've seen a lot of pics online where people have like a glowing aura painted around their models and on pieces of the model. How does one go about doing this?

It's called "Object Source Lighting" or OSL if you want to search for tutorials. I've not done it myself, so can't help much more. Someone will probably be along in a minute with a direct link to a tutorial.
