Subject: Turbo-boosting must only be done in a straight line?
|
 |
Freaky Flayed One
|
Please check my logic and see if I made any mistake or violated the spirit of the game ...
>>> Must a unit that Turbo-boosts move only in a straight line with zero turns?
Pivoting/turning is an action - page 18
Performing this action (pivoting) on the spot (without moving) counts as remaining stationary -- page 18
Immobilized Vehicles can not perform this voluntary action (pivot/turn) - page 76
Turbo-boosting Bikes/Jetbikes cannot shoot, charge, or perform any other voluntary action - page 63
>>> THEREFORE, Turbo-boosting Jetbikes must move only in a straight line and can neither turn nor curve in the process

I don't have the 7th rule book but isn't it worded May not make any voluntary action after turbo boosting, so during or before is fine?

Incidentally, there is no allowance for even Infantry to move in a curved line. I doubt many people will play it that way, though!
That said, the basic movement rules do say that you can change facing however you want when moving. Since this is where movement is defined, one would think that Turbo Boosting (as well as Running and moving Flat Out) follow the normal rules for movement, though this sadly isn't actually stated in the rules.

The specific caveat in the rules for turbo-boosting makes all the difference and takes precedence over the more general rules for movement. Otherwise the specific exceptions and caveats in Codices would not take precedence.

It gives you permission to move, with everything that entails. Turning during movement is part of the move; it's not a separate action at all.

Alright, let me follow the logic of the opposite being true.
Dark Eldar Jetbike Turbo drive-by slice & dice. If allowed to roam all over the board in imaginative ways as long as it winds up a distance from its starting point equal to exactly its longest turbo-boost move ... then it can slice & dfice over every single enemy unit in the game each turn. Not a good outcome.
Dark Eldar Jetbike Turbo drive-by slice & dice. If allowed to go across the board and back to its original starting point as long as the total distance claimed to have been moved is equal to its longest turbo-boost move ... then it can slice & dice an enemy unit with ever even moving an inch. Not a good outcome.
I would like to understand how these two are possible under the rules and the "can not turn" is unsupported.

Well im not playing DE but the way i read the Dex is:
You have Bladevanes and Grav-talons. Each says: [...]on one [...]unit under the line[...]
So you'd end up with 2 free hits instead of shooting more or less.
*shrug* well yeah no gamebreaker i'd say.
Edit: And then i looked at the FAQ and it says: a model that causes a wound with bladevanes uses grav-talons, so only 1 attack...

+1
The only place i can see that even mentions pivoting is if you dont move, sooo i think we can agree that it's not intended that non-vehicles can only move straight lines.
Edit2: nother one from the FAQ:
Q: How do you mark the start and end points of a unit of unit of
Reavers move when they are using their special Bladevanes attack?
(p29)
A: Should confusion arise, simply pick any model in the unit as
the start point and mark that spot. Then move the unit and
pick any model as the end point. One unengaged, non-vehicle
unit under the line between the two markers can then be
chosen to be the target of the attack.
To me this would imply a straight line, but it's RAI now RAW

Tom,
the DE faq is pretty clear as to how bladevanes are resolved ( DE faq, pg4). You draw a straight line from the starting and ending point. Any unit under that line can be hit by the bladevanes. So I'm not entirely sure what it is you are on about here.

Then you're claiming they meant for it to be able to hit any unit on the table. Given if you allow it to curve, at all, it can curve to hit any unit on the table.

No, the line is a straight one drawn between the models start and end points, regardless of how much curving they do when they actually move. AFAIK anyway.

I know is a straight line ( as that's the definition of a line, no curve allowed) I was pointing out that, even if you pretend line meand something else, you're essentially stating they can hit anything, which fails the snuff test something chronic.

well a line in geometry also extends infinitely to both sides afaik . so not quite applicable imho
And just to put this straight: it's not how i would play it, it's just how i read it.
RAI is: a unit it moved over, isnt it? so the length of the line segment, either curved or straight is limited by the movement allowance anyways.

Maybe my google-fu is off, but every instance I see with the definition of line says nothing about straight.
The rule tells you to "mark the start and end points of the units move, and trace an imaginary line between these 2 points."
The shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line, so you draw a straight line. It does not say to trace the path of the models move, only to draw a line between the start and end points of its move.
As for the turbo boosting rule in general, nothing tells you that you must move in a straight line.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

How does a rule about pivoting on the spot without moving apply to turbo-boosting bikes? Aren't they moving?

From dictionary.com line[ lahyn ]
noun
1. a mark or stroke long in proportion to its breadth, made with a pen, pencil, tool, etc., on a surface: a line down the middle of the page.
2. a continuous extent of length, straight or curved, without breadth or thickness; the trace of a moving point.
3. something arranged along a line, especially a straight line; a row or series: a line of trees.
Webster online dictionary mentions nothing about being straight either. I'm not searching for "geometric line" because that's not whats mentioned in the codex. Simply a "line". All of the dictionary definitions of "line" I have seen have mentioned nothing about a line needing to be straight in order to be a line.
