So with the news rules to IC, a Buff Commander or Shadowsun can't join a Riptide. However, how does this work with O'vesa who is an IC Riptide. He obviously can't join a Riptide due to this, but what happens if he try to join Buff Commander?

Can he join the IC if joins him, but not the other way around, or is it rejected both ways?

My guess is he might be FAQed to just be a character like the C'tan Shards in the necron codex... They wanted to get rid of buffmander by the look things. They won't leave a loophole.

They wanted to get rid of the O'vesastar. Support'o is still playable.

O'vesa is possibly the most contradictory unit in the game. RAW, he can't exist! He's a MC (and as such, a unit by himself) AND an IC, so his very existence is against the rules (a MC and IC in the same unit!)

The underlined is false. Carnifexes are MC units, Canoptek Spyders are MC units... or do you have a rule to back up your statement?

So O'vesa isn't a unit? Does that mean that, since you can only target units, an unattached O'vesa is unable to be shot at?

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Rigeld was saying that each single MC is not necessarily a unit itself.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

I had this conversation with a Tau-playing friend of mine the other night.
I have immense reservation at this "chicken or egg" argument. Only in the world of Warhammer Players does this sort of semantic argument crop up.
"My MC isn't joining a unit, the unit is joining him" or vice versa.
Independent Characters cannot join units that contain vehicles or Monstrous Creatures. Period. The named Riptide has the monstrous creature rule. Therefore, no joining. Its very simple.

I fail to see the difference between "My IC isn't joining my MC, my MC is joining my IC instead". Its semantics of Subjective/Objective form grammar at best and its the worst kind of equivocation. When your MC joins your IC, your IC also joins your MC. Which he isn't allowed to. Period.

So he can't join a unit at all?

I agree up until this point

The named Riptide has the monstrous creature rule. Therefore, no joining. Its very simple.

I fail to see the difference between "My IC isn't joining my MC, my MC is joining my IC instead". Its semantics of Subjective/Objective form grammar at best and its the worst kind of equivocation. When your MC joins your IC, your IC also joins your MC. Which he isn't allowed to. Period.

This part has no rules basis whatsoever.
A) Units have no rules allowing them to join anything, the IC joins the unit, not the other way around
B) Even if they could and did join Independent Characters, units do not have restrictions stopping them from joining a Monstrous Creature
What you see as semantics I see as fundamental aspects of the way the game functions.

(A) is actually very important when it comes to Battle Brothers, as a Dark Eldar IC joined to an Eldar unit is still an Eldar unit and benefits from Eldar rules, but is not a Dark Eldar unit and cannot benefit from rules that specify "Dark Eldar units".

No conflict, just a series of some of the silliest arguments I have ever read in 40k.
