White House Press Secretary Jay Carney is resigning from his post, President Obama said in a surprise appearance at the regular daily press conference Friday.

The president jokingly asked the press to be nice to Carney on his farewell tour.

“I'm going to miss him a lot,” Obama said about Carney, adding that the press secretary has become a good friend and one of his closest advisors since he replaced longtime Obama communications strategist Robert Gibbs in February 2011.

This has been a busy day for resignations within the administration, as Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki also resigned from his post amid scandal within the VA hospital system.

Earnest, who joined then-Senator Obama's presidential campaign in March 2007, had been serving as Obama's special assistant and principal deputy press secretary.

Yeah. I kind of feel like no matter how much scandal there is or isn't, he's still up there talking to people and answering questions that don't have easy answers. I doubt the administration matters. He's probably up there 24/7 going "damn it can I go home now?"

These days, with the 24/7 news cycle, I'm amazed any White House Press Secretary can last longer than a month. That's the kind of job that prematurely ages you.

Especially when your boss knows nothing and leaves you to field all the questions

Personally, I think the WH Press Secretary should have one of those Secret Service ear pieces...

This way when he/she gets asked a dumb question, or one they don't know the answer to, they can go, "hey... guys, I'm in trouble out here, give me something" and then stall for time until the press team backstage can give a "good answer"

It's tempting to go back the last few administrations and see how long the average run for a press secretary goes. I think it must be a pretty tiresome job regardless of who's in the POTUS chair.

I thought Gibbs was OK, but I liked Scott McClellan more (this was before his face heel turn, which I did not see coming).

I was also fond of Dana Perino but it was less for her spokeswomanning and more becaus I found her to be super, super cute. Which is super sexist of me, I know.
