If there was a topic on this I didn't see it.

What is a legal formation? The only new codex that has them are the Adeptus Tempestus codex (that I know of). I have the Adeptus Militarum codex, and it doesn't have any formations that I can find. Does this mean that Apocalypse formations are now legal in normal games? I am curious if the Ork codex will have formations listed.

Has anyone put together a list of formations?

Anyway, I appreciate folks thoughts on this topic.

GW put out a series of dataslates for formations starting over christmas.

There was a tau one (6 broadsides + riptide)
A SM one (Storm Raven and 2 storm talons)
And one for chaos (cypher and chosen)

Since then I have seen A series of Tyranid ones and 3 helbrute ones.

I think they are all available on the black library website.

they also just recently released a dataslate that contained two unique ultramarines terminator formations IIRC

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Tyranids have 3 dataslates filled with formations (4 in each, I think)
Tau has 1
SM had 3, now five
Cypher's dataslate come with a formation
Eldar has 1
Apocalypse has a lot for each Faction
Warzone books (they're like supplements for Acpocalypse) have more as well
And Imperial Armour books generally have more formations as well (for Apocalypse)

Yes they are. I wanted to quote this just in case anyone misses it.

So GW has been putting out formations for a long time now. Until recently it was in Apocalypse. What makes a formation "legal"?

Yes I realize that whatever the players agree to is fine. Just curious what everyone considers "legal".

Would you play against somebody wanting to use Apocalypse formations? Or just the dataslates, and codex formations? Or?

7th BRB has a black box regarding Formations. In each Dataslate containing Formations, there is a text like this:

ARMY LIST ENTRIES
An Army List Entry provides all the relevant information to field a single unit in games of Warhammer 40,000, including its points value and Battlefield Role.

Codex Formations are even more easier to use, as they are, well, inside a codex (MT has 2).

There is absolutely no point not playing against formations, unless you don't want to/tournament veto it out.

Apocalypse formations are much more powerful than 40k formations, so I'd advise to keep them there.

I said in the OP that MT has formations in it.

I know that Apocalypse formations are powerful. That again wasn't the question. I'm wondering if there is a "community" consensus on what formations are "legal". I know there never is a 100% consensus. I'm hoping to hear people's thoughts, on why they would or wouldn't allow Apocalypse formations. Or, which formations you would consider legal, and why.
