Haven't seen anyone question this yet:
When assaulting a unit, the unit wanting to charge (for example, necron warriors) cannot charge if they have fired the guass weapons during the shooting phase (not shooting rapid fire). I checked the rules for 7th and it states this, is this really how it works now? I know in 6th we were able to charge if we didn't rapid fire during the shooting phase, but even if we don't we can't charge now?

(Emphasis mine) I am not sure what you mean by the underlined. Rapid fire is a weapon type, not a mode of shooting. you do not rapid fire a bolter anymore than you Heavy a Lascannon or Assault a Flamer. If you are referring to shooting twice from a rapid fire weapon, call it Double Tap, it will confuse less people. If you shoot with a rapid fire weapon you can not charge in the ensuing assault phase.

I apologize for the confusion. To be clear on this:
If I was to Double Tap (shoot twice per model that has the rapid fire weapon rule), I can't charge during the assault phase. But, if I shot once (per model) with the same weapon, do I still get to charge with that unit or no since it has the rapid fire rule for the weapon.

No, because you fired a weapon with the rapid fire rule, as that is what is restricted.

You can not fire a single shot from a weapon with the rapid fire type if you are at 1/2 range or less, you have to fire at full effect. (Weapons section, Number of shots subsection, 3rd graph 2nd sentence).

And just for completeness' sake, this:

Hasn't actually been the case for several editions now. Since at least 5th edition, firing Rapid Fire weapons at all stopped you from charging.

At least fourth. From memory 3rd you could choose to fire once

You mentioned Necrons so I was wondering if you play Necrons. If you do, you can get a Phaeron upgrade to your Overlord which gives him and his warriors Relentless. With Relentless, you would be able to fire rapid fire weapons (gauss) and charge.
Just in case you did not know about Relentless.
And of course, welcome to the game!

You might have seen people shooting Space Marines with a single bolter shot each and then charging- this is because SM are also equipped with Bolt Pistols alongside Bolters, and a model can elect to fire any which weapon it carries. Bolt pistols have no prohibition on charging.

Yes I play necrons, I am able to finally start playing 1500 pt games now. I also did see I can take the phaeron ability, which I do use in my list with immortals. But yea as God in Action mentioned in his update, that was where I got the idea at first. My friend I have been playing with (tau player) pointed this out to me which was why I brought it up to this forum just for clarification.

Best way to think of it:
Shooting any weapon denies the ability to charge, unless that Weapon states otherwise or an unrelated Special Rule is used.
Pistols and Assault Weapon Types universally allow assault after firing, everything else tends to use a Special Rule to get there.
