I stopped playing 40k when X-Wing miniatures came out and haven't gone back. Now that the new edition is out I'm done with 40k permanently.

Unfortunately any hope of getting a friend to play died with the the last price rise. Pick up games are at this point my only real option.

Have you considered getting a few friends into a smaller game rather than 40K?

Kinda hard since I know no other games that interest me or require small model counts. I would be open to suggestions though. Also keep in mind things were finally starting to turn around for me until 7th edition hit.

Make a game. That's what I did when I got disheartened by my gaming group. It was fun, it broke the monotony, and I found people to play test it just to see if they could "break it".

I recently stepped away from GW games and now that I'm playing the other games out there I wonder why I ever played 40k. I find the rules of these other games much more fun. I also really like the different stories these games have. It's refreshing and that sounds like what you need right now. Cleanse the pallet so to speak.

Not to be too snarky about it, but did you perhaps see this thread sticky'ed to the top of this forum?

My group decided to take a break from 40k about three months ago. Started playing other games and have not looked back. Taking a break from 40k for me personally feels like a giant weight off my shoulders, the balance of 40k just drove me nuts. Play other games, paint your army, and learn their is life outside of 40k.

I agree with this. Plus, there are typically few rules dipsute then.

I'm going to try to stick with game swhere you can use your existing models...

Asa far as smaller scale games that may interest them. INQ28 maybe a new and very differetn experience for people that still allows them to use some of your existing 40K collections. However, that game maybe for more "experienced" wargamers as is designed as a cross between an RPG and wargame called a narrative wargame. It is not about winning and losing but creating narrative. It is a very different and rewarding gaming experience.... if it fits what you want out of games.

Otherwise, I also recommend Tomorrow's War/Force-on-Force. This will also allow you to use your existing models. Games can range in size from 4 men per side up to Platoon + size games. However, the games structure is very different from the 40K set-up. It uses an action/reaction system.

Song of Blades and Heroes also has a sci-fi version but the name escapes me. Bulkheada and Blasters maybe? Again, it would allow you to use your existing collection and by all account sit is a fun little game.

However, that thread posted previously will be your friend.

Blasters and Bulkheads is a sci-fi game, but it's not based on SBH, it's based on the "Goalsystem" rules. Nice rules though, and they just released a new edition.

As for Ganesha Games (maker's of SBH) They have "Flying Lead" which is for WW2 through near future, and "Swatters" which is a sci-fi bug hunt game, but their main Sci-Fi combat game is still in the works.

Two other suggestions for using your 40k miniatures would be In The Emperor's Name (3rd edition is out, but incomplete, stick with 2nd edition) which is a very rules-lite approach to warband skirmish gaming in the 40k universe, complete with retinue army lists and a neat campaign system.

Another would be Inquisimunda. It's basically a fan-project of taking the Necromunda ruleset and expanding it into the wider 40k world. Combines the coolness of the Inquisitor setting with a ruleset you'd actually want to play. A few different folks have tried this, but one of the best is here http://empireofghosts.blogspot.com/p/inquisimunda-resources.html

I have perhaps 6-8 friends locally that have expressed interest in starting 40k until they saw the prices and we discussed the buy-in necessary to own a 1500pt army.

That left every single one of them totally blanched and boggled.

We may well be launching into the Xwing or Star Trek games though.

If you're asking, you should probably not. It's just about toy soldiers : if it's getting tedious, just stop for a while and do something else.

Keep the stuff you really like, but feel free to sell everything else, especially if you need cash and/or space. I always kept my Dark Elves and Brets (matching pair since 5th ed) and my Mordheim minis, but I'm currently getting rid of my SoB, before they get the squat treatment.

I'm a person who quit Warhammer 40k about 6 months ago, and I have to say that quitting is the best part that I've ever experienced. It's almost like kicking a drug habit.

Being in The Hobby for a while I started to get used to the insane pricing. You justify how expensive every little thing is, how incredibly hard it is to afford what you want and how you have to surrender other parts of your life for the sake of the Hobby. Quitting is hard, too. I would recommend making a personal vow to never spend another dollar on Games Workshop products, at least as they're going right now.

I've taken to purchasing in bulk older 2nd hand LOTR models off ebay. I've now got a horde of good condition, metal LOTR figures sitting on my shelf.

I'm going to be busy for a long time...

After some thought decided to start Inq28. Then I went out to get 8th edition...

The cycle continues!

Anyway I finally figured out where I was going "wrong" with my army lists.

I recently picked up some Savage Orcs and Dwarf Warriors to do some Mordheiming. $70 seemed perfectly adequate for the amount of stuff I got in those kits. However, if I had to buy 8 of those boxes for Fantasy army I would just nope on out of there. Also, $20 for a single model is out of the question. I don't care what it does in game. I could go get drunk for that.

I'm curious about Inq28 too, but I didn't search enough yet.

Looks like you made your choice. Hope it works out for you.

Still, maybe you should have done this...

I can personally vouch for this.

Didn't buy any of my bases with mini-sale-money, but these days it is surprising what a good quality bass one could purchase if they really start liquidating their collection. A couple of 40k armies on the block, and you could have a nice instrument.

Inq28 helped me stay in the 40K universe and reinvigorated it for me.

Here is a good group of supportive and talneted wargamers that do Inq28: http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/forum/3012277/

Good luck.

Be curious to find out what was 'wrong' with your list building.

Try some other games - loads out there and just proxy your 40K figures until you find something you like..............

Well where to start...

Main issue was a lack of substantial heavy firepower or any tanks. I am currently building a infantry heavy list using a few "extras" through unbound list building. Also I will start bringing my standard and FW list to my local club.

Thanks for the forum link. I cobbled up a whole bunch of INq28 stuff yesterday. I'll probably start a P&M blog for it.

Try "I play Warhammer", it's even better than "I play wargames".

You can have fine basses from Cort/Ibanez/Yamaha for less than 25-30 Flash Gitz.
And electric guitars are even less expensive than basses.

Add another 10-15 toy soldiers, you've got your strap, gig bag, cable, and multi-effect pedals like these nice G1ON/B1ON that double as a tuner, metronome, headphone amp, DI box...

Gotta go with a bass guitar on that one. I even had by bass in Iraq.
Selling a 40k army can buy a whole lot of much better games.
