Is it possible? I am talking about in a friendly setting gaming at the house with buddies and beer. I do not plan to play in tournaments EVER and I love the idea of themed armies. I just don't want an army that is so impossible to play that I get annoyed and no longer want to play. Entire gaming group is new players so we will all be learning together. Have never played WHFB before.

I consider myself a pretty good tactician and general so I can take a challenge I am just simply trying to avoid "impossible" winning scenarios.

Starting out small around 500-800 points.

Thanks in advance.

Chaos Warriors of Khorne?

I have an army at 1000 points and it does very well. Bloodcrushers and Khorne Gorebeast Chariots are some of the best units in the book.

WoC are already a pretty powerful book, so if you max out on all the best stuff it makes for a pretty balanced list without the magic.

Perhaps I should of stated I mean Daemons of Chaos. I am not opposed to maybe adding in some Tzeentch for some magic but I really like the look of the Khorne daemons.

Mostly the army will be carried on the shoulders of the Bloodthirster, Skull Cannons, MoK Furies & Ambushing Flesh Hounds.

Bloodletters are awful combat troops who rely on one of the game's most expensive, yet squishiest Heroes to really function.
A Jugger Herald w/Axe of Khorne is decent for leading a small unit of 3-4 Bloodcrushers, but sadly, you never want more than 4 per unit as all their offense comes from the Jugger itself. (which can't attack in the second rank like normal Infantry/Monstrous Infantry can)

If you don't mind adding in some Tzeentch, then I'd honestly look into something like:

Lords:
Bloodthirster w/2x Lesser Gifts
OR
2x Daemon Prince of Khorne (make sure one or both have wings, but honestly, these guys are pretty average and pale in comparison to the WoC Princes... but Daemon Princes are just such bad@$$ characters in the backround!)

Heroes:
Herald on Jugger w/Axe of Khorne, Lesser Locus
1-2 Lv2 Tzeentch Herald(s) w/Exalted Locus
2x Exalted Flamers

Core:
15 Horrors w/Muso + Banner
15 Horrors w/Muso + Banner
12 Horrors

Special:
4 Bloodcrushers w/full command + Razor Banner
2x 5-6 Furies w/Mark of Khorne
1-2x 5-8 Flesh Hounds w/Ambushers upgrade
3-4x Flamers of Tzeentch (put both Exalted Flamers here!)

Rare:
Soul Grinder w/Mark of Tzeentch + Baleful Torrent
1x Skull Cannon (taking 2 garners instant butt hurt from most people)
2x Burning Chariots of Tzeentch

Not anywhere near a "competitive" list, but it should match-up decently against other 'for fun' lists.

Now if no one in your group have cannon(s), then you can always try some Bloodletter units of 25-30 w/full command and boost them through a Herald on Bloodthrone. It's horrifically expensive - your Hero who's pretty much naked will clock in easily at 350-400pts, which is the equivalent of most Lord choices from other books! (and he's still easy to kill)
But it is a fun model and it's just plain cool to envision a horde of Bloodletters being driven into combat by some blood-maddened loon on a crazy flesh-eating chariot!

You'll find out that Heroes especially are the worst part of the Daemon army, simply because you can't viably protect any of them, outside of the Nurgle Herald.
Likewise, never, ever spend more than the minimum 25% on our Core because it's overall pretty pants outside of those Plaguebearers. All our killing power tends to come from the Rare section and Special section, and both tend to operate better in what's known as 'Multiple Small Units' where you take basically minimum-sized or just above it. (Beasts of Nurgle excepted, but they're plain game-breaking and taking more than 4 in a single unit is considered rather rude!)

Do eeet! I'm a fan of Mono-Khorne. I usually do Mono-gods in my lists because I like to keep a theme to them. (disclaimer: I mostly just make lists and have only played one game of WHFB w/ WoC... and it wasn't mono-godded).

I played Mono Khrone when i first started fantasy, if you don't want to play competitively its fine, I had good luck with mine but it was against only people who had also just started playing fantasy, as time went on I had less and less luck.

People talk about how horrible bloodletters are, but nothing inspires fear like a horde of 40 bloodletters, and if you constantly run small units of blood letters and people get used to how much they suck they will ignore the horde until its too late

Wood Elves: 2400 pts
Tau & Gue'vesa (IG): 9000 pts
Chaos Daemons 3500pts Fantasy

Don't do it man. You cannot leverage skill and tactics in GW games to overcome inferior army choice.

This isn't just mindless GW-hate either, just trust me when I say your going to waste your time and money and sell it all on ebay at the end like all the others.

You can play other, better designed games in a casual beer and pretzels environment, with the option of playing 'properly' later on if you want.

I can also assure you that theres nothing less enjoyable than hunting for a rule in the big rulebook while pissed and only an hour into your four hour typical game length

If you were a group of grizzled veterans that had all grown the same ideas about how the rules work, then it would have been a great idea. But no, you're not gonna have good games learning a GW game with beer.
Try one of the other games with a sane set of rules. Malifaux, Warmahordes, Infinity.

I love the GW games, but they are NOT accessible to new learners, and particularly not to new learners 4 beers deep into the night.

I ran a 1500 pt Monokhorne DOC list for a Triumph and Treachery game a few weeks ago. Nothing is more beer and pretzel than that, and it worked just fine. I drew for first. So close.

And are you and your whole group beginners learning the rules?

The group was half new. But Mono Khorne is pretty point and click, even more so on the 4 person free for all with constantly getting screwed by the cards.

I'm not discouraging mono khorne. I'm discouraging GW as a whole if you're all new and want to drink beers while trying to learn.
For the first 20 games or so, I'd recommend staying with only the pretzels if you wanna play GW.
And let's face it. We like beer.
