Hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone else approaches the hobby in the same way as me. I've been collecting two armies for a few years now (Black Templars and Dark Eldar). I don't play much, but I really enjoy it when I do. I really enjoy painting, but I am really slow.
Lately however, I've been spending loads more time on my models. The reason for this sudden surge is that I discovered the wonderful world of magnets for the first time. I've been learning to use them, and have been assembling a box of Sternguard with loads of different weapon options. It's been great!
So, does anyone else share my experience? If so, what brought on your sudden surge of activity?

Oh, certainly. Sometimes I'll sit down and get, like, 10 models done in a single day (and I don't do the "Orks? Spray 'em all green! Done!" thing)... and then other times a year will pass between painting sessions.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

The worst part about bursts is when you get a chunk of a large project done then shelve it for months. Come back and you can't get the mix or style you've done half of it in right. :(
But yes, most certainly. Motivation ebbs and flows.

Haha this basically opitimizes my hobby ing lately. I won't do anything for a month then in a single weekend I'll go bananas. Like over Memorial Day weekend I painted 3 demon princes, fateweaver, 3 centurions, and a storm raven, while also assembling the centurions, 10 scouts, and 20 guardsman. I hadn't painted or assembled a thing in over a month before that haha.

Yep, it's best to try not to push through it. When you're done for that session, you're done.
Some days I'll finish a few models and others I might get a unit basecoated instead and be halfway through the layer over it on a model.

I think most people go through spurts of models. IT is a cycle that takes a great deal of effort. I'll be super productive for a few months then take a couple off.

Haha, I remember when I lost my magnet + pinning virginty, it just opens up so many more possibilities! I need to get round to magnetizing my war walkers from six or seven years ago, rather than telling my opponent "by the way this is a bright lance" every game.
But yeah, I tend to have irregular flurries of activity when painting. I've currently got models sat on my desk that haven't seen a paintbrush for a week or so, but not long ago I was furiously painting zombies for a tournament. Deadlines do help, I find.

Looks like it happens for most people. It happens for me too. I might play a game a month or so and the week before I will try and get a bit of stuff completed I want to use in the game I have scheduled. Just last weekend I got a good bit done on some orks. I was playing in a team game with another orks player and I did not want a sea of primed orks that could get mixed up with the other guys stuff (not everythign he has is painted either. So that inspired me to get a bit of paint on 1250 pts worth of Orks.

Yep.
Sometimes i dont paint anything for months.
Recently i painted 35 or 40 figures in the space of a month or so which for me is really significant. Recently though i hit another block. I'm waiting for a can of army painter pure red.
Groan.
But yes. Bursts of productivity are common here.

I usually get annoyed at a broken model and start to fix it then next thing I know the whole day has gone by modeling and painting.
Other wise I never get around to anything lol.

I get bursts, but one handy thing I've found to push my productivity is organized events, like a tournament or an Apoc game. Makes me push for a week or two beforehand to get stuff done. That's how I got my 60+ autogun cultists done in a week.

Yes, once every blue moon I'll paint 1/2 a model and then never touch a paintbrush again for another few months.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Same here. Going through my burst of activity these few months.
Will start to post some pictures of what I have completed. It's faster than those off months where I do nothing but it is still slow!

I had a long period of no painting done, and then I nearly painted an entire army in a couple of months. Then back to not so much anymore. I have a number of half finished units gathering dust on my desk. Wanting to play again will help, as I eitehr haven't been able to or just not motivated to do anything much lately due to the IRL. With new ork stuff coming out, I may get inspired again shortly. If nothing else, will try to get back on my "15 minutes/day" regimen.

I completely sympathise with this, I had this problem when painting my incubi, the green colour I was using was different every time! Same with robes, I see a different technique every time.

I leave mine out on a windowsill, so that their half finished paint job shames me into picking them up. I find that once I start I can't stop!
