Hey guys!!

Teaching my girlfriend Space Wolves and now that 7th dropped, she asked me a good question. Even though their special little note/rule/condition states that they are NOT scoring, even as a troop choice with Canis (FAQ'd in the last 6th ed release) are they now? Can they hold a objective, but get stopped off by lets say a Grey Knights Strike Squad? How to I go about this?

Personally, I think as they can hold objectives, but can't contest. Any help clarifying this?

If the codex says they are non-scoring units, they are non-scoring units.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.
Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Volguus Zildrohar, Gozer the Traveler, and Lord of the Sebouillia

Ok, just read her codex, I mis-understood. It says they may not claim objectives under any circumstances....

Does that make any difference?

If they cannot claim then they are non-scoring. That means they can still deny, and if taken as a Troops within a CAD would possibly have Objective Secured, although would still be non-scoring.

So basically they can't hold the objective, but they can contest it?

Basically if I had a Strike Squad (Pure Grey Knights list Force Org'd) and she ran her wolves up, it would be contested? So they're more of a denial unit than scoring?

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

As long as a Fenrisian Wolf is within 3" of an objective, it can, at best, contest it. Doesn't matter if there's a scoring model in the unit, that specific model will have to get within 3" of the objective if you want to score with it.

They had an exception in 6th, this is 7th
Rhino's landraiders, etc couldn't score in 6th. Now they do.

That's a change in the rulebook.
This is a rule in the Codex.
And that hasn't changed.

The new rule for scoring states any unit can be scoring unless "it has a special rule specifing that it never counts as a scoring unit". Fenrisian Wolves still have such a rule.

I do not think there is such a thing as "Contesting an Objective" I cant find how a non scoring unit contests an objective anywhere in the rules.

Non scoring models cannot contest objectives.

Why I ask is she runs Canis, with two squads of 15 wolves. Doesn't Objective Secured give them the ability to contest in a traditional list? Cause with Canis they are Troops....

Lets say I have a strike squad on an objective, and she gets into CC with her squad of wolves and the game ends, isn't that objective contested, therefor I don't get points for it? I thought to get points for an objective you have to control it. Or is that only in effect when lets say blood claws are in CC with my SS.

That is what I thought, but I just wanted to make sure I was not missing anything.

No that objective is not contested, as there needs to be a scoring unit near the objective to contest it. Non scoring models cannot contest objectives.

So in a nutshell, until the codex drops, they're still just a WLDS haha. I just wanted to clarify because with 7th ed dropping 2 weeks after I decided to get back into 40k after 8 months, I was a bit confused.

I'd be surprised if they ever made them a scoring unit. It doesn't really make a lot of sense for a bunch of pet wolves to know enough about strategy to hold down the objective...

As with Drop-pods:
Knowing what an objective consists of is irrelevant, all that matters is if they can identify an enemy and keep them away from the point.
A well trained canine be more then able to keep anyone not a 'pack brother' away from the thing they where ordered to Guard.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
