I am currently running Salamander tactics. At higher point games, I can hold my own. My toughest opponent at small points is currently Tyranids. At 750 points he brings a crone, dakka flyrant, mawloc, ~3 warriors, and a bunch of gaunts. I just don't know how to deal with that many MC's running around the board. Especially that T6 FMC with 12 TL S6 shots.

I have available:
Vulkan
MotF/Techmarine on bike
PA/TDA Librarian
2 Ven Dreads and 1 Ironclad
Assault terminators
2 tac squads
Scout squad
2 land speeders
Assault squad
Vindicator
ADL with quadgun if I need it

The one thing I would go down to the store and buy are a box of devestators and then bring a dread

1x5 devestators with ml's (/w flakk) manning an adl with quad

And the dread is for once their on the ground. Once grounded your dready plods over and then bashes them over the head with his fist.

Another option is to seal club in a land raider. Tyranids have no way to pen or glance av14 consistently. A land raider is impervious to everything but a very.. Very lucky smash attack. And given the list, he can only get 2 off a turn in cc (flyrant and the mawloc). Kill those first; And he's cooked. If you buy extra armor he will be forced to glance you to death with his smash attacks that will rarely hit anyway.

Kinda talking out of school, but Salamanders should be in good shape. If you grab a Melta or two, that should help you wound Monsters. And Flamers handle Gaunts only too well. A good source of AA is pretty much a "must". Nids are very dominate at low point games, so you will have a tough row to hoe.

I usually take 2 Tac squads with MM/flamer/combi melta. It helps, but the problem is the range. If I'm within range of his MC, I'm in range of a ton of S6 shots. My plasma cannon dreads do well here. Same with my lascannon dreads. I will run them with ML's once I find the arms for a good price.

He also tends to bring a venomthrope. I usually have to dedicate my assault squad to taking it out. It's a difficult choice to sacrifice an assault squad but 2 or 3+ cover saves make hard to kill units even more so.

I definitely need to invest in some dedicated AA.
