Avenger Strike Fighter: why wouldn't you buy it  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Why wouldn't you buy an Avenger Strike Fighter?
Too expensive (For Forgeworld prices, I need to sell mine and my spouse's kidneys, so no)
I don't play SoB/IG so it's no use to me
Do not think it looks nice (I believe a converted Valkyrie, or any other flyer, looks nicer and would use that instead)
I play SoB/IG but I don't feel it fits/work in my list
I bought it!
No easy access to rules (have to buy another rulebook)

I've been looking at the Avenger Strike Fighter more recently, especially about its design features and how it pays homage to the A-10. The name is even Avenger, most likely named after the Avenger cannon which the A-10 is built around. With such a cool design and great aesthetics (it looks really sleek) and, in my opinion, is one of the sweetest looking fighters on FW. But I hardly see it. Not that many pictures on Dakka (Shandara has some really nice pictures of the Avenger. Love the paintjob!) and also, not much featured most places.

So I was just wondering is it really rare to see the original one (not conversions or scratch built) and if so, what's the reason? FW costing? Not many SoB or IG players would play it? Or not many SoB players so less often seen (since IG have better options in the Vendetta)? Or most don't like the design?

Edited the poll: Hope it makes it clearer!

I'm definitely considering getting one for my Sisters. Like you, I think they look freaking awesome. Yeah, it is slightly pricey but that's a secondary concern.

My main problem is that I have to make room for it. I use 2 Exorcists and a Retributor Squad in my Heavy Support; even though on paper the Retributor Squad doesn't seem like much, I'm hesitant to give up my beloved Rending Heavy Bolters :( And I don't think I can make myself drop an Exorcist either. Someone, help convince me!

Im just sick of buying real FW stuff. Its a real rip off (to me) as ill have to do their job and straighten the bits out and cleaning it. However I do really love the look and design. So other than FW being lazy there is no reason I wouldnt buy it. Especially with that awesome tail gun.

It's a great model, but seeing what Japan and other countries are doing in multicolor plastic or what Creature Caster is doing in resin and then looking at the Forgeworld big stuff... and then their prices?! Nah, just nah. I want an Avenger Strike Fighter, too, as it is the 40k A-10. To represent that, it should have 4~6HP cause those birds don't fail! But at it's price and what I've read about recent people buying the larger kits from FW? Waste of cash. With photos of twisted hulls for Storm Eagles, a super expensive flyer, I expect better.

Aside, OP, your poll questions and answers just doesn't seem to quite make much sense. Could you try rephrasing them?

I thought it was like a WW2 dive bomber. Kind of like those Stukas and Corsair looking planes. I just looked at the rules and it doesnt have bombs or anything, just a giant mini gun and another frontal weapon.

I thought it's more a role of Close-Air Support for ground targets given that it has a rear mounted AA (crummy) weapon. But maybe it's built for more speed given it's only 2HP. But then it's weapon loadout doesn't make sense because it's got an obvious anti-ground gun on the front.

It's a confused, but pretty, bird for certain!

It can take bombs, but it's basically a Stuka refitted as an A-10 Thunderbolt.

As for why you don't see many of the official Forge World model, its just so damn easy to convert a Nephilim into one that its unbelievable.

None of the above: I did buy one and it's a very nice model with awesome rules.

Well, as long as you don't mind having a plane that looks like a Nephilim with the wings glued on upside down. I'm not really a fan of those conversions, it's WYSIYWG but I don't think it's anywhere close to as nice as the real model.

Good point. I should edit the poll to see how many people bought it too.

You missed the option: No easy access to the rules.

I'm not going to play one in my SoB army until I have a copy of the rules. No rules, no need for the model.

On moon miranda.

It's a cool looking fighter, but a very expensive model for a unit that's hilariously easy to kill for a relatively high points investment. Cool model, but paying that much for a model that won't get very much game time typically isn't super attractive.

I like the look of it as with all of Forgeworld's big fliers tanks and gribblies, but it is out of my price bracket at the moment.

I'd love to have one but that price is just way too high. I'd rather convert one than pay that ridiculous price.

I own 3, yet to use them, gave the 4th to a friend who used it yesterday for the first time.

My intent is to use them with my Militarum Tempestus force. I wanted to get the feel of an elite infantry spec/ops unit which relies on air support for heavy lifting.

Agreed. The Nephilim conversion looks pretty good although I would extend the wings and the tail section out some more, to make it look closer to the original design.

With the sterling to euro conversion rate and shipping costs, a lot of FW stuff is brutally priced here in Ireland.
I can imagine its similar elsewhere.

Here is quite a cool conversion that I found on google images. It is supposed to be a counts as storm raven, but I reckon that with some weapon swaps, it would make a great avenger.

Yea, I'm probably gonna find a DA player quitting and salvage a Nephalim into an Avenger.

It even has the engines where the A-10 has them! But I'm more taken by the Avenger. The Nephilim conversion I feel may be a bit smaller than the actual model, making it less impressive.

So every now and then when I see a shooting star, I make a wish that FW will drop their prices. Other times I wish they'll give Sisters a physical codex and rework. Lol

And I'd better edit the poll for the rules accessibility.

Strangely enough, I like the look of the Avenger the least among the three flyers FW makes. So, I bought a Thunderbolt instead.

Price and having to get the Forgeworld book with the rules. Why should my SoB have to pay well over 100€ for a flyer when other armies have them in the Codex and available as GW plastic kits?

Nope, nope, nope.

Of all the crap GW puts out, FW big kits are the worst.

The whole concept is ridiculous:

1. Take an already expensive product.
2. Make it more expensive.
3. Make it prettier.
4. Use a crap material and make the quality pathetic.
5. Make your dumbass customers think the lousy quality just means they are superiour hobbyists since they enjoy paying more for defective garbage.
6. Profit.

Until those clowns make a product that doesn't arrive as half-melted, half-missing over-priced trash, there's no way I'm buying any more of that gak.

I'm not bitter. At all.

I bought one, and I absolutely love it. The thing is huge, and looks bad ass. Always sparks loads of comments when I pull it out, probably my second favourite FW kit [after the Warhound Titan, which I also have ]

Well the better quality comes from the fineness of detail that resin retains better than pewter or plastic.

I wouldn't call the Avenger big either... It's more like a land speeder with some wings in terms of size.

Like all 40k items, these are kits and that means they require assembly. Resin models tend to require some additional skill sets. As far as being "superior" hobbyists ... Consider Legos where kits increase in complexity and more varied component assembly... People want challenges. Some people sculpt, some people paint, some people just build. Few are trying to assert any sense of dominance. They're just trying to have fun doing what they enjoy. When the point of a hobby is to have fun the superior hobbyist is the one who has the most fun and shares it.

I'm not up for spending the money and I don't need any fliers, but I have to admit that it's one hella nice plane. Something about the way it looks is just a little more classy than a standard airplane. FW really makes some nice stuff.

I imagine that's what Marbo flies when he needs to get to work.

ED: Actually, the Thunderbolt looks a little nicer.
