So I was watching one of those channels"not sure which" with the comedians. Now he was saying kinda dumb jokes but between my trying to sleep and being lazy as hell I didn't turn the channel.

Now here is the joke I don't get.

How do you get 100 Canadians out of a pool?
Say the pool is closing.

Then the audience erupted with laughter I set there thinking well what dick wouldn't get out of the pool if it was closing....... But hell maybe someone else can tell me how it is funny.

I need to go to work every day.

I'm guessing there were a series of jokes in front of it describing the stereotypes of how rude Americans can be and how polite Canadians are.

To get the 100 Canadians out in a calm manner, you simply say the pool is closing, which is the joke. Not terribly funny, but then, I'm not sitting in an audience after having had 4 drinks, nor have I heard the set up or lead up to that joke.

I'm at a loss myself.

Maybe it's a riff on how polite Canadian's are?

Thats the weird thing tho his last jokes where about his wife in bed. Then he said here is a few jokes that always made my dad laugh. So it was kinda like a stand alone joke.

How do you get Brazilians to leave a favela in time for the world cup?

You send in thousands of police armed with assault weapons to beat, shoot, or arrest everyone who is there.

...you had to be there I guess.

I think it is one of those anti Joke things, basically it is funny because it is not what the audience expected to hear.

So the Joke was how do you get a 100 Canadians out of a swimming pool? The audience is expecting the comedian to say something absurd or something that is stereotypical about Canadians. For instance Tell them the Hockey Game is on, or cook some bacon something like that but he says tell them the pool is closing it is nothing serious. It is funny because it is not

It is like Yo Mama is so fat.....That she should see a doctor because obesity and diabetes are a serious health concern

Something along those lines

Or its just a crap joke... It reminds me a tad of that scene from Borat where the comedian tries to teach Sasha what a "Not" joke is, or rather attempting to inform a decent comedian why your own childish jokes are supposed to be funny. Meh, American humour. Take it at face value, a lot of it doesn't have much substance (stick on a laugh track and people think its funny). =P

Oh, because the British are deep, intellectual humorists? The land of fart and bathroom jokes is pulling rank on the vapid colonials, eh?

I think Alpha 1 nailed it. The joke is only funny because it isn't funny. The other hint may be that the comedian said he was going to tell jokes that made his dad laugh. Dad jokes are also notoriously not funny.

Not enough? What about:

Okay, so really, that's not showing that British humor is intellectual, merely that American humor is certainly not. I don't care.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

British humour is tiered, some of it is deep, some is dry and yet there is also a lot of toilet humour, generally speaking this is because of the old class system.

Compare Flanders and Swann to Carry On films and you will see British mainstream humour played to different audiences.

The class based humour is long gone, television saw to that in the early 70's but the humour remains.

As fro the joke about the Canadian pool, its more continental humour and is targeted at Americans rather than Canadians. Yes it is funny if you know the context of the stereotypes involved, but the joke is in reverse.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

I don't even know if I can tell anymore. It's kind of like reducto ad absurdum combined with cynicism has overwhelmed my ability to think critically. Probably not really serious though. Those are American "things" though.

I proffer this in the meantime:

Yes, the nation that gave the world Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses, Monty Python, The Two Ronnies, Blackadder, Mr Bean, Not the Nine o'Clock news and Fry and Laurie* is pulling comedic rank. Do you have anything to say in your defence?

Mr. Bean is intellectual?

Also, I'll go ahead and play my trump card in round 1 to end this silly "debate".

When you look at the talent of the actor to stage and perform a character like that, I'd say yes. It's not just a bloke pratting around, it's a bloke pratting around in a way that, in terms of comedic timing and framing, is flawless and a class act.

Genuine question, who is Benny Hill? The name rings a bell, but I don't recall seeing any of his stuff.

Isn't he a politician? Well, if you're opening up that can of worms, then go for it. The majority of the British cabinet at the moment are impossible to parody as they are too funny themselves. Clegg, Gove, Hague, May; Live House Of Commons is more of a comedy show than half of what we get on the comedy channels.

Also, I missed Yes, Minister (and Yes, Prime Minister) from my list. Another classic.

Nothing about this thread is funny.

Mexican humor is the best. It usually involved very "healthy" individuals who are exceedingly easy on the eyes.

Don't get me wrong, Rowan Atkinson was incredibly talented and funny as Mr. Bean. I enjoy his stuff very much. But that's just an act as much as Larry the Cable guy is an act. And both are very silly in their own respect.

I'll grant that US humor is more vulgar than British humor, but I wouldn't call either of them more intellectual. That's 2 different things.

I don't need to, Cheesecat did a fine job of listing some quality American comedians/shows a few posts above.

A very fortuitous experience occurred last night that is relevant to this discussion. A friend of mine who happens to be from the land of peerless comedy showed me the "quality" British program Bottom. Please explain how England, which is apparently the mecca of high wit, could produce the show Bottom? Is there some substance to bludgeoning people with frying pans, stapling severed fingers on to hands backwards and shooting gypsies with pellet guns that I was missing? Now, while watching those segments of Bottom I was laughing, because dumb comedy like that is amusing at times (especially when loaded). But to suggest that the majority of American comedy is without merit when you lot have just as much low brow crap as we do is nothing more than trolling at its absolute best.
