Has anyone had any experience of digital editions of codex etc. I was thinking of getting the new Ork dex but it seems to be itunes only.
Does this mean if I go to android platforms I can never use it?

If you go to black library, they have it for android. It runs on nook/etc. They are basically big text documents and can be formatted strangely. Past that they're ok.

If you are used to digital editions of other products, such as roleplaying game books, the non-interactive ebooks are of a really shoddy quality. I really wish they could sell me a PDF of the proper codex with bookmarks. However, head over to the black library and check out the excerpts of the book you are interested in.

I've got the iBook version of the Astra Militarium, book and I do like it. The only thing I don't like is that if you want the physical copy and the digital copy then you have to essentially buy the book twice. Should offer a discount on the digital if you own the physically (or at least the collector's edition!).

They also have not yet updated the AM book for 7th edition...

In my experience with the SoB codex, it is a update of the file so I had to download the ePub again.
Edit: The quote marks went a bit crazy, not too sure why. I'm not too sure how to fix it.
Edit 2: ah fixed it

By update, I meant that they would put in the new psychic powers under primaris psykers and the new wording for rules in the hyperlinks.
The codex came out one month before 7th edition, it'd be infuriating if they released the codex and one month later it was out of date. It's not a huge problem, but it is inconvenient that I have to switch between the codex and the rulebook on my ipad (which takes forever to load) just to find all the psychic powers.

The non-ipad digital versions are pretty dismal IMO. They basically take the written codex (a double column ~A4 book) and copy/paste it in to ebook format (single column ~A5). This results in horrible formatting, you have to flick through hundreds of pages of poorly formatted gak to actually get to the rule you wanted to look at. Pictures that were clearly designed for double column format just get shoved in, so often you end up with pages that are nothing but a picture and a whole heap of empty space.
The whole thing is just painful to read or reference.
The only good thing about them is if you have a lot of time to waste you can export them to a Word document and fix the formatting and actually end up with something better formatted than the original printed codex. It's not what I consider a great solution given it does take a while, often things you thought would be text turn out to be pictures and so reformatting a digital codex mostly comes down to resizing and repositioning the images.

Did you actually get the digital version? Cause I have all of them on my ipad and they work well. Though I did have initial issues with the PDF ones, switched to epub and everything was perfect

I bought the digital version direct from black library, tried both ePub and mobi and they were both similarly dismal. The iTunes versions are better from what I understand, but they obviously require an ipad to use.

the mobi versions are pretty awful. oddly broken up paragraphs, section headers on the page before the text they're attached to and the usual atrocious GW typo control.

The only time I can recommend the non-iBooks versions is if...
a) you want to save money. They are cheaper after all.
b) you have free time on your hands and want to reformat it. Given that even the printed codices are formatted pretty badly, this could be a genuine reason to want a digital edition, they can be exported to word and you can format your own codex.

The ePub is the PDF version. The one with the annotations and the proper page formatting that only works on the iPad is the iBooks version.

With most current editions of Word, you can also format it to have a functional index, ToC and bookmarks. It just takes awhile and some know-how, but it's not terribly difficult.

I use my wife's iPad so don't know about the Epub version. What nifty features do you get?

My iPad version of the AM Codex was updated over a week ago.
It does now included updated rules and psychic powers.
You might want to double check the ibooks store for the update.

Actually untrue. There is an Epub, a Mobi and a PDF version.
Epub is the actual version designed for e-readers, it fits better, runs smoother, tons of bookmarks, a better search tool, definition tool, highlight tool and pretty much what you would expect

There is no PDF version. Black Library does not do PDF versions, rather. Any "PDF version" you may have found is an illegal scan of the hardcopy books or a conversion of the ePub or mobi version.
ePub sadly doesn't work on my kindle, but from previous experience with ePubs, they're just a standard ebook format, no fancy gubbins or tricks.

I've got the iPad AM codes and I found it very disappointing personally, it was my first one, and frankly I think that the gimmicky features don't make up for being poorly planned and slow to load. I read it once, and haven't used it again in favour of a hard copy...I wouldn't buy another one and I wouldn't recommend then, not when as others have said, you have to pay for a hard copy at the same price.
