So the tournament is over....and Bretonnia walks away with Best General (1st Place)

So a three round event that had me face Wood Elves, Skaven and Vampire counts in the finals. Here is how the Brets were able to walk away victorious.

1) Wood Elves, a new player just really getting into the game (he may have played long ago and just getting back in cant remember). He played very defensively and spread his units out across the entire board. I baited with my Pegasus Knights on my left flank but on turn one flew them 20" back to the majority of my army on the right flank. I had a left just the Knights Errant on the left side of my "castle" as a defense (but still within 12 of my general). I then pushed a KotR refused flank up the right side of the board. Ended up killing just enough points to get the victory. He scored no points as the closest he got was 1 knight left in the Errants.

2) Skaven. Boy where to start, this guy had a bad game all around (also a fairly new player)...but honestly its was skaven being.... well .....skaven. Turn 1 shooting sees me drop a Trebuchet right on top of a doom wheel and pop it, also his bell on his turn doesn't want to start working. Honestly the bell did nothing all game except actually destroy the only building on the table. Which at the time was not garrisoned. His poison mortar thing misfired and blew its self up and took some of its parent unit with it. The lighting cannon did some wounds during the game but I managed to resurrect the fallen. He also played very defensively with the unbreakable bell unit which was scaring the crap out of me. I stayed right at 12 with he edge of some woods between us and kept trying to dwellers the thing. Game ends with him getting no points and me a victory.

3) Vampire Counts, 3 Vamps a BSB in a unit of skels, a horde of 100 (yup I said 100) zombies with a necro, 2 terrorgheists, a corpse cart, some dogs and bats. This guy was a veteran player who knew his army well. Unfortunately the scenario really beat this guy. Dawn Attack. The scenario saw him all out of position with a ton of his stuff on his left side. My deployment saw me with most of my stuff on my left side also. Lots of room between armies. Trebs won the day on this one. Turn one I double Treb a Terrorgheist off the board, turn two would see me single treb one off the board by rolling a 6 on the D6 wounds. Turn three I drop a treb on the vampire character bus coming and 3 of his vamps fail to make look out sirs. I kill 2 outright but fail to wound the lord (sad panda). Pegasus knights spend the first 4 turns running around the backfield cleaning up trash. Dogs, Corpse Cart, bat swarms. This allows me to in turn 5 commit my last KotR unit, my remaining Peg and whats still locked in combat of my Character bus with his lord unit. Turn 5 sees me kill everything but the lord. Turn 6 he challenges but cant do enough wounds to keep the lord from popping to Combat Resolution. That's game.

So, what do we know. This was first attempt at playing my Brets under the new rules set and the nerf to cav. You def have a better chance at playing a point denial game than trying to win through brute force. Two, a stubborn unit of 40 MaA along with a Life casting level 4 somewhere nearby is a real pain. All my opponents were really great guys and I had a lot of fun. And we raised 600.00 (there was also a 40k team event going) for the American Cancer Society.

The List not going item by item but generalized.

10 x KotR with Heroic Killing Blow Lord (never HKB anything all day, in fact didn't KB anything for that matter), Level 4 life caster, BSB, 2 Paladins up front and a chump pally to take challenges. Lord and one pally set up with re-rollable armor saves.
8 x KoTR
9 x KErrant with Erranty Banner
3 x Pegasus Knights
15 x Bowman (flaming, skirmishing)
40 x MaA with level 2 beast damsel
2 x Trebuchets

So again what we know is, brets can win with enough lucky dice rolling (just like the bronies at the GT).

Anyway congrats on raising 600.00!

Um...wow. Seems like it's less about "cavalry can be good if you play point-denial" and more about "TREBUCHETS OMG!" One-shotting a Doomwheel isn't likely. Two-shotting a 'Gheist isn't either, much less one-shotting his partner next turn. And...three Vampires failing their...never mind. I can't even bear to think about that.

I'm all for the way dice influence the game, and how they can result in some pretty zany situations, but...yuck.
