Hate may be described as the opposite of love, but that's nonsensical. Apathy is the opposite of love. Hate, or extreme dislike, is still a passionate feeling toward someone (or thing). So it's not an opposite so much as a fork in the road.

So you might love your tribe, and be fearful of what might happen to your tribe if the other tribe takes over the fishing hole. So you hate the other tribe. Meanwhile the other tribe are all hippies who know nothing of your hate, and so when you swoop in and attack them you give them a right proper thrashing. You control the fishing hole, and your tribe prospers while the hippies flounder. And in this way your genetic mutation to hate grows and expands through humanity.
Yep. Or god did it. I don't know who to believe.

I don't agree. Apathy is the opposite of emotion, but within the sub-category of emotions called "strong emotions" hate opposes love.

I knew someone was going to post that at some point
In any case, I am far from being a pshycologist, but I believe that Freud defined hatred as an energy which causes an individual to strive for the destruction of a source of unhappiness (or something like that in any case, don't pin me on translations)
So we could say that hate is an emotion that pushes people to eliminate things that make them unhappy, which probably is evolutionary advantageous as happy people are more succesful.
On a very simple level that would go like: Person B's actions are disadvantageous towards the goals of Person A. Person B thus makes Person A unhappy. Person A then starts to hate Person B. The hatred continues to grow and pushes Person A towards eliminating Person B. With Person B out of the way, the source of the unhappiness and hatred is removed. Person A is no longer hindered by Person B in the pursueing of his goals and is more happy as a result.

You can never really hate something. You may dislike it, but you will never hate something. Just like how you can never truly love something. What do I mean by this? Get lost to passion. Let everything go. If I told you to let go of everything you held dear for the person you loved. You would think me insane. It can happen, but its so rare it is obscene. You may become addicted to something or obsesses over-something, but hate is not obsession. Its Hate, its a completely different thing. Just like True Love. You can never let go of everything for just one person.

I'm with fraz, what you posted there is horse gak.
Basically you're saying you can't truly love or truly hate because some other stuff is more intense love or more intense hate. Which is a lot like saying that a building isn't tall because there's another building somewhere else that's even taller.

Not to nitpick, but real hate, is something that you would carry out. That transcends reasonableness. Hate is something we can try to reach but we can't. You may strongly dislike, dislike them enough to try to attempt it or think it. But you can never kill them, you can't absolutely hate them to the degree of just wanting to rip their flesh out and boil their bones. We humans can't think that much of hate. Hate is like the good vs evil debate. There is no good and there is no evil. There is the in between, never extremes. Humanity can never truly be hateful. Where all you live and breathe is to kill, maim and murder. Its a physical state which we cannot comprehend. To passionately hate someone to want to kill them just for the sake of killing them because you hate them that much. Is inconceivable! If someone kills someone for fun, that is still not hate, your still doing it for a reason. You for example wanted retribution which is not hate, you just wanted to get something back. Which is still justifable dislike or severe dislike. But it is not hate. Hate is the absence of feeling, it is feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone). I don't think anyone here thinks to them selves. You know what. I am going to shoot up a mall. Just because I hate everyone there. You do because have passion, you have a very sick passion that is.
Just Like love and Hate. Everyone falls in between. We humans aren't capable in my opinion of hate, just like evil and good. No matter how hard we try we always kill for a reason. We don't kill for no reason at all just for the sake of killing (like it doesn't even phase you, you just do it). We may severely dislike them, but we don't passionately hate them. We don't spend every waking moment think how do I kill this person.
There are.... Exceptions. Borderlines, and some other cases are possible. I will not rule that out. So I might withdraw my statement of never to possibly but most likely never ever might not. Because the amount of people that truly hate are probably mentally unstable or truly off their meds.
But thats what I've read from Philisophy books. So you can take that with a grain of salt. (Also funny fact there are people who have the last name Hate. Like just hate. Fun fact of the day.)
Not really hippy bull crap more, standing back as a philisopher and thinking, can we truly hate?
Clearly I've been reading to much Immanuel Kant and Ayn Rand.

Yes I can and have done. Believe me, back in high school if I were to suffer no repercussions for my actions this world would be short a good few people.
That hatred has become seething rage and envy over the past few years.
You're making up nonsense and I personally blame your reading Ayn Rand for it.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I would too,
But passion is hate. Hate is not envy.
So maybe a subsection. Wrath and Envy.
But I don't think its nonsensical, its just my view. We don't kill for the sake of passion. Its rare if we do. Your describing obession or something alikened to the degree of hate, which is envy, Wrath, and fear. You would kill someone because you were passionate about killing them. You would kill them because wanted to kill them for what they did to you. Thats not hate that. That is loathing. A step before, pure hate. Close but no cigars. In my honest Opinion.
But this entire conversation is all up for grabs, because in all honesty its just a word and people have different meanings for it. For me its severe passionate dislike to the degree of being evil. For others its just I dislike this person to a degree.

Once again, this is like saying that a skyscraper isn't tall because there's another building that's taller.
In fact, it's like saying that a skyscraper isn't tall because we have can think of a building that would be taller.
