Hey folks, I am currently looking at finally starting the SWTOR MMO, (finally getting a laptop for it soon also), I am now finally getting into it now, because my internet connection was crappy where i live, and i never really got a chance to start it, but i am no stranger AT ALL to Star Wars games, having lived and breathed them for the past many, many years on my desktop computer which is now completely shot since the outlet on the wall blew out, and practically fried my desktop but soon i will be going off to college, etc, and would like to know where i could get a laptop (gaming laptop) that is good to run swtor on, BUT, within a budget, since i do not have that much to spend on it. Also, the laptop will not only have to be a gaming laptop, but a laptop that i will have to do college stuff on as well...... so to be very specific.... the laptop would have to be able to run games with good graphics, etc, AND do college stuff, like doing big papers, and projects, etc on it. Just curious if anyone knew any good, but affordable laptops that could run the swtor mmo, as well as other games also, AND do the basic laptop stuff that college students would need a laptop to do.

I will also most likely start a thread asking about which class might be the best to start the swtor mmo with, etc, and new player tips, etc, unless there already is one on dakka dakka, that i have not seen yet.

Just to play devils advocate, why not take a desktop to college? You will most likely just be taking notes in lectures and typing them up when you get back to your dorm anyway. You could get something a lot more solid on a budget that way.
I understand that some courses would require you to cart your pc around though but if your not going to be needing inside lectures e.t.c then it might be a better idea to go with a desktop.

Maybe, but I kinda have to go the laptop route, since I will need it to be mobile, etc, and i'll get a desktop rig when I move into my first apartment whenever that is

You can get a decent-enough gaming laptop at Office Depot for probably $600. SWTOR does not have very high system requirements.

Hey everyone, i was just curious if anyone knew if a laptop with the following features would be good enough for running swtor on it-

i5 processor
8 gb of memory
1 terabyte of hard drive
beats audio

and it also includes these, but i dont think it really makes a difference for games-
life time tech assisstance
virus protection for the entire life of the computer
microsoft office built in
etc

You are listing the wrong parts if you want to know about spec.
You are better off looking at the listed spec on the SWTOR website, and comparing the graphics listed against the laptops for sale. Keep in mind that the game is ~3 years old.
For comparisons, look at sites such as Toms Hardware.
A laptop with a good GPU and sound is the start, and choosing the CPU and HDD to suit.
Ignore speaker quality, as you're better off with a good set of headphones. The same with the screen, if you can take a monitor with you. Just check for outputs for both.

Well, i will definitely check the gpu's, etc, but no, i cant take a monitor with me, since i'd like the computer to be mobile, and since i will be in college , etc, its practically mandatory for it to have a laptop for the game, til i get a desktop which will be when i get my first apartment, or something like that.

The computer would be mobile, being a laptop, but plugging in a monitor lets the laptops power exceed the limits of the laptop's own screen. Gaming is much more reliant on specification than note-taking, and a laptop with a low- to mid-range screen would handle most uses well, but gaming needs more.
A monitor is not a desktop, and plugs into any PC of any type. It, like the speakers or headphones, make the laptop so much more than a folding slab of hardware. You are not very likely to carry your gaming headphones into a lecture, and the monitor is the same. I assume you'd want a proper keyboard to game with, too.
Laptop /= monitor, as monitor /= desktop.

Those should all run TOR fine, as near as I can tell. Just depends on if you want a 15.6 or a 14 incher.

The hierarchy of graphics cards makes choosing kit much easier. I can't see the R9 M275 from the Y40 there, but the M270 is. There are gaps, so it's just a guide.
Knowing how the model numbers work saves a lot of time. A nVidia "560 ti" is better than a "560" which is better than a "560 se", but the older 480 is better than them all in a lot of ways.

That does look the best choice of those you've listed.
Smaller screen so it's lighter to carry around, a good video card, meaty i7 chip.

You should be fine with that.

It depends. i7 tends to screw up sometimes and perform worse than a i5 because it interferes with the integrated graphics solution aka throttles performance down by a huge margin.

The GPU on this one isn't that integrated, being non-Intel.

My wife's former reserve laptop had that prob, i7 with a...hm...Geforce 750M iirc. i7 throttled the whole system down making it significantally slower than a i5.

because people don't know what a micro tower is and/or mobility that it is extremely unlikely they will use is worth paying three times more
My media center case is less than half the size of my stereo receiver and rocks and rolls you just have to be careful with video card selection (if you even need one, I didnt)
