I'm deciding how to build my broadsides. I'm currently debating if I should add missile drones. Any input from you guys?

If you have spare points they can be nice. but they will may the broadsides more likely to run.

Mandatory. More for the ablative wounds than anything else. They can do damage even without marker support, its just severely less likely than the broadsides behind them.
Whether you have railsides or missilesides, if they have no ablative wound drones in front of them they WILL get shot at with S8+ weaponry, and every army has some that are capable of sniping the broadsides out. Orks and Nids are the only ones youre kinda unlikely to see any shooting S8+ attacks with AP2/1, but it still exists and they still have many S8 attacks that if you fail a 2+ save its dead anyway.
My broadsides have taken a lot of heat, through multiple turns, and only lost the drones in most situations. Usually its Turn 3/4 when i start getting hurt unless something sneaky got around my ablative wound wall.

Agree with Vineheart. If you are even considering drones on your broadsides, missile drones are the way to go.
All drones are basically bullet sponges for the suits they protect. As broadsides are usually/always in cover, you usually don't need shield drones, and if enough nasty dakka is coming towards the sides, it is only a matter of time. Gun drones lack the range of either side configuration, and marker drones are rarely needed after broadsides shoot at something, leaving missile drones. They die the same as the non shielded, but can dakka back. Bonus points if you have a drone controller to increase their killing power.
The main downside to taking drones is risking leadership. Since broadsides are usually keeping back, one failed morale test can mean breaking off the table. Tau have plenty of ways to counteract this, depending on your playstyle and how many points you want to spend. At least bond if your going drone heavy, but a 'vre is also good for higher Ld. Broadsides make great places to bubble an ethereal and the 6+ fnp is just gravy for your sides. Buffmanders also do well here, further buffing your sides(and their drones with a BS5 drone controller) while tanking bullets.

I don't agree with the above posts - missile drones are not all they're cracked up to be.
One broadside costs the same as 5.5 missile drones - so on the face of it, you'd think you're getting more firepower and almost three times as many wounds. But the superior BS and twinlinking of his weapons, combined with just how many shots they send downrange means that he's landing almost twice as many shots (a combination of the S7 missiles and the S5 ignores cover missiles). Taking a drone controller improves the ratio almost to parity, but not quite.
So basically, you take missile drones if you want extra ablative wounds with 4+ armor saves (vs fewer extra wounds, but with 2+ armor saves, and slightly better firepower). I'm not a huge believer in the concept of padding your unit with ablative wounds - all they do is make for great fodder for high- ap fire that the broadsides would normally shrug off with 2+ saves.

That combo does really make them worth it - missile drones become a rather nice source of S7 dakka when they can actually hit things.

Missile Drones are usually worth it, but don't forget, drone controllers do NOT increase their BS, so make sure you take that into consideration when determining their support options.
Other than that, Vineheart01 and Dr. Serling have the right of it.

Eww... I never noticed that the drone controller entry doesn't list missile drones (we've been playing it wrong for the last year). That really... I don't know why you would take them without the ability to buff their BS.

Why missile drones are limited to the Broadsides and not affected by a Drone Controller I will never understand. I accidentally played my commander with a drone controller and two missile drones. While it was nice, it was not crazy OP or anything.
Thanks,

About the only way to actually deal with a buffmander, missileside, missile drone blob is with a plasma blastgun.
They are ridiculously resilient to everything else, take them if you want to win more often.

Thanks, Duncan Because of what people were immediately going to do before the codex got FAQ'd not even a day after release since the codex doesnt say only broadsides can take missile drones (it does say they arent affected by DC though). Six 6man Firewarrior units with Shas'ui and 2 Missile drones - 528pts 3 Crisis Suit trios with Missile Drones and Missile Pods - 729pts Broadsides with HYMP and Missile Drones - 282pts Add a buffmander to something: ~150 if not tanky buffmander, 210 if he is. Total: 1749pts. If youre playing a bigger game, just add some markerlights. That is a grand total of 12x3 BS3 Non-twinlinked S7 Ap4 shots via the crisis suits, 12 that are via the broadsides, and 72 BS2 non-twinlinked via the THIRTY SIX missile pods. Add buffmander to a crisis unit, now 12 BS3 and 12 BS2 are twinlinked and ignores cover and have monster or tankhunter. Dramatically increases the amount of damage compared to a broadsside unit thats already twinlinked anyway. Thats a grand total of 120 S7 Ap4 attacks at 36" available at the start of a game. Dont forget we also have 12 SMS at 30" and 36 Firewarriors for more dakka. Do you understand why only broadsides can take them now? lol EDIT: Yes, i know the obvious weakness is lack of AV14. Who has more than 2 land raiders in a single game, and we can easily get side armor on BW....nobody fields the rest that are AV14 all around because theyre garbage. Dont care if i cant hurt two of your models when EVERYTHING ELSE is dead lol

Speaking of basic Tau things, what exactly constitutes a Buffmander? I hear that a lot with Tau, but I am not sure exactly what it refers too.
Thanks,
Duncan

The most basic form is a Tau Commander with the pieces of wargear that allow his unit to re-roll to hit and ignore cover if the owning model does not shoot, however it is an umbrella that encompases all commanders with those two pieces of wargear and any other wargear sch as iridium armour (tanking buffmander) and so on.

I sincerely doubt i was the first one to start using it but i started calling a commander with said upgrades a buffmander immediately. I saw others doing it shortly after, but i wasnt that active on the forums at the time so could just be a coincidence. There are 3 pieces of wargear that are always taken with each other since they do the same job - they make a unit not need markerlight support. The two listed earlier are the ones that allow you to hit better. Theres also the Puretide Chip which enables his unit to have either Tank Hunter or Monster Hunter, deciding at the begining of your turn which you want. Theres other choices but why the hell would you not take one of those two since the rest only affect the bearer of the puretide chip. The loadout i always use when i think buffmander is: Commander 213pts Flamer, Drone Controller, Shield Gen, Stim Inject Signature Systems: Command n Control Node, Multi-Spectrum Sensor Suite, Puretide Engram Chip, and Iridium Armor. I have been putting him in a crisis unit with missilepods and markerlight drones. Very durable, dangerous, and guaranteed 6 Markerlights on any target i want (unless im snapping for some reason). Lot of non-tau players dont understand why i would "waste" a BS5 model like that. Yet every single Tau player realizes the ability to not require markerlights and reliably destory vehicles/big bugs VASTLY outweighs the BS5 model lol. On average i cause 7-9 wounds on a monstrous creature, and usually wreck any AV12 or less vehicle whenever these things shoot thanks to commander buffy lol

Are buffmanders good? yes.
Fun? less. your hero ain't "doing" anything!
I'd rather have my Ralai blow stuff up to kingdom come.
And considering the riptide can't be buffed any more, the efficiency of the buffmander is slightly reduced. broadside overkill is nice and all, but you don't need a buffmander to get broadside of all things to overkill stuff, they do a fine job themselves (and are already TL and partially ignore cover), and in the farsight bomb you got a regular dude on buff duty.
In any case, when building a buffmander you might as well take the NSJ as well, it usually wont get anything done, but even if it kills a single grot, it paid for itself. (and hurts a meaningful model, its funny.)
