Hey All,
I love building 1/72 scale tanks from any era. what is a good ruleset to use these in? I a, looking for a game that will have about 10 - 15 tanks per side with some infantry mixed in?
Thanks

Battlgroup would probably be the best option.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

What's the difficulty curve on Battlegroup. I just started with BA, looking into FOW though.

Mechanics are fairly simple, but tactical use of them takes a little practice... like most games.

Battlegroup is a bit chart oriented though, not a negative, but different from what you've played before. It's not all charts, but they just play a bigger role than games like Bolt Action and FoW.

There are some great youtube videos that show what's involved in the game.

Other than vehicle and gun data, all of the charts are all on one playsheet for ease.
Gun and vehicle data is at the back of each book, and though you do tend to remember some, you will need to check some as you play.
We are looking into little data cards for vehicles to speed that up too.
I don't play either FoW or BA but its very similar in regards charts as say, Rapid Fire, another fast play WW2 set of rules.
Some good vids as linked, also check out Justin Model Dads blog for Warwick running through the mechanics.
We also have a forum here;
www.guildwargamers.com
Plus more downloads on the Ironfist Publishing web site.
We also have an ironfist page and a Battlegroup page on facebook.
All of those should help to give an idea of the feel and mechanics of the system.

Well i dont mind chart orientated stuff. I will have to pick up battlegroup. I hope they have it at the warstore.
Does the battlegroup book have sample army lists in it? I want to get a feel on what i would need for a few intro games. Or can some list off the top of their head what a intro army list would look like.

The core rules are in the Battlegroup Kursk book and the mini rulebook, you need one of those to learn how to play. The Battlegroup Kursk book also has lists for Kursk, and each other Battlegroup book has army lists for the specific theatre they're representing. At the moment the operations covered are: Kursk, Overlord, Fall of the Reich, and Barbarossa.
A typical army list at 600 pts, which is what I play at:
Forward Headquarters
Armored Panzergrenadier Platoon (4 half tracks; 30 men)
4 Panzer IVs
2 Supply Trucks
2 Wespe Self-Propelled Guns
Armored Recon Platoon (3 half tracks; 10 men)

How big of a table do you think for 20-30 vehicles for a non parking lot game?

I play 15mm Battlegroup for what its worth, but really to be honest it depends on the Era.
In 41 using the Barbarossa theater book a t26 company has 17 tanks. for 250ish points..so a 6x8 table would work
in Kursk for example one of the campaign missions plays on a 6x6 table has about 19 tanks(in waves over 3 turns) its about 800 point list.
@ 500 points in Late War Fall of the Reight(1945) from the other nights game. I had 3 T-34/85's, 2 ISU-122's, 1 supply truck, 2 120mm Heavy Mortar teams and 1 platoon of infantry(about 35 individual infantry) and some recce.
we play games less then 750 on a 6x4
I find that Battlegroup's point value is about .5 that of Flames of War so an 800 point game of Battlegroup would be about a 1600 point Flames of war game..approx.
Its a longer game so far for us..rules are much more streamlined..but its a slower paced game due to managing individual casualties vs teams.
I still like FOW but if i have a choice I would rather play a game of Battlegroup..I enjoy it quiet abit more.
