One or 2 smaller armies. Heck even one or 2 different smaller armies for one faction is better.

The downside to smaller armies is you cant just pick and choose what you want. But I find it adds to the fun of the game when you are forced to make hard choices.

I picked ( and do ) collect multiple small armies that I am growing a bit each at a time. I think I should have finished an army with everything I wanted before moving to the next but I regret nothing!

I prefer building up a large army so that I can vary my list widely and for each game. Some days I play shooty, some days I try an assault based list. It gives variety to each game you play with that same army.

So if my group plays 1500, I would collect probably 2500-3000 points, to have options.

But I also collect armies that I like only, regardless of what tier they are supposedly in. So YMMV.

Or you just pick and choose what you want before you buy anything, and once you've got that perfectly optimized TAC list you're unable to try anything new.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Ok... then later on when you feel like using something else you have to buy, assemble and paint it which increases your forces instead of just having them there. A problem mitigated by having a larger army (as you have more to choose from off the bat).

proably multiple smaller armies. problem with a singular large army is several fold.

1: you're never gonna have the oppertunity to deploy it.
2: eventually painting the same thing get's kinda dull. I'm taking a breather from my marines for that reason,

multiple smaller armies allows you some varity. cause even the most diverse army is pretty limited. take space Marines for example. you have a few unique minis, but a LOT are eaither variations on the rhino or variations on space marines.

there's also the ability to expand your painting skill set, I found with my marines my painting skills have sort of hit a plateau as I'm happy with em (although they're far from perfect) I've been plauying around with other armies etc to expand my painting

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

this is actually a good reason why the Detachment method works for 40K right now. You can build multiple small armies (change up the painting monotony) and still have a legal combined force. Can't decide between Dark Angels or Space Wolves? Make a detachment of both.

I have a whole bunch of smaller armies (maybe 4 or 5) at around 750 points. Then again I also have two armies at 1500-2000 and a dark angels force of well over 4k

I find that having multiple smaller projects to work on let's me vary what I build/paint and thus makes the hobby more interesting, the only issue being that I never actually complete anything

That would be sweet, but who has that kind of money to spend on plastic soldiers?

You will be shocked at the collections of many gamers.

Its actually a serious problem that many joke about. I swear some people are addicted to buying armies and adding to their collections. Only for most of it to never be used or painted.

Scary stuff

I do think its a bad thing

I came to realize it when my IG army was huge and vastly unpainted. I decided to sell it and start fresh. Trying to keep my stuff painted and tidy. Its not hard but its certainly better than the old way of just buying any good looking model that tickled my fancy.

Stop while you can!

My goal is to get to fully painted 1850 with my Space Wolves before buying a second army. I can avoid the temptation of buying new models, but I buy every codex that comes out.

I have to say multiple smaller armies just for the sole purpose of changing it up whenever you want. For example in my signature are all the armies that I am planning of getting (as of now anyways and is subject to change). My goals are to have at least 1 Imperial Army and one Xenos army to change things up, for now I am aiming towards 2500pts. for each but may expand both to 3500pts. each just to have more variety in changing up my lists.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.

Having multiple smaller armies.

Also, I just can't help but saying this... The most satisfying way to collect is to do elaborate conversions/sculpt and modify your own units. Having units looking like they came from a White Dwarf or whatever is satisfying, but having units that are completely unique and your own is even better.

I have a good friend/gaming buddy with whom I combine armies for huge battles.

As a collector i don't care about armies, but getting one (figure/model) of everything at least that was until the prices of certain companies went through the roof.

I focus a large army, but I pick up deals for my other favourites when they come past, and add to it where i need to, to play

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

huge is more then 1500pts? If yes, then it is better to have one 1500 army and two or three options for ally.

Voted "multiple smaller armies" because I think 40k plays best at 1500 and lower; you don't get all the big toys, but that size is closer to what I remember 40k being years ago and closer to IMO the true spirit of the game. Preferably smaller armies built around a logical theme (e.g. one SM army, one IG army, maybe one that's a different SM chapter or SoB or Inquisitors or the like) than two that are chosen to abuse allies.

I'm a large army fan.

I have three armies, of varying sizes.

My orks are my 'big' army. Sooo many of the little fethers to paint, and painting orks sucks :( Love playing them though...
I had more than i do now, but sold a bunch off when it became apparent that i would be retired before i was done (a lot of old models, from back when i couldn't paint worth a damn, not that i'm that amazing now ...). My orks were 'collected out' barring the occasional buy just for modelling awesomes/conversion possibilities. Then the new codex dropped, so i have a few new things on my workbench

My DE are a bit smaller, being my 'backup' army for when i want to actually hit what i shoot at I still have a fair few things on my shopping list, and a LOT of painting to do.

My Nurgle Daemons are complete. I sat down and planned a specific force, then bought to match. They were intended as a painting/modelling project, and are fully painted and based, with no new models on the horizon.

Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Smaller, so I can use allied detatchments, and not have 60% on shelf at any given game.

I think that having multiple smaller armies is more fun, however, having one large army is more impressive.

Smaller armies, is where I am at. But I always drool over the people with gigantic armies as they are amazing when all laid out.

I couldn't do a gigantic army because my interests in a few armies limits me to put it all in one army.
