When running melta vets, what is the popular doctrine to give them? I was thinking demolitions, or is that simply over kill having a demo charge and 3 melta guns all in the one squad? Some insight would be great to how others use there vets and what they run with. Thanks guys

over there

I use sniper vets with an autocannon, krak grenades, foward sentries, grenediers, and give the sarge a boltgun.

The west is on its death spiral.

It was a good run.

Grenadiers; with the ammount of AP5 weapons lying around, that 4+ will help keep them alive; even with a chimera, they'll end up walking sooner or later..

This all the way, 4+ doubles your survivability against most guns and is a steal for just 15 points!

I think I'm still stuck in the mindset from the previous codexes when carapace was so much more expensive and on habit tend to over look it. But thanks for the insight guys

You know, I was going to say this was illegal because vets can only have one doctrine, but I checked the book and saw that the wording is now "may take any of the following doctrines." I wonder if that's intended behavior or if it's still supposed to work the way it used to.

I'm pretty sure the wording was the same in the last codex, but most people baulked at buying 1 for 30 points, let alone 2. But yes, you could take 90 points of upgrades and 95 points of guns on your 70 point Vet squad.

3 meltas old school. I don't find the loss of the fire point to be that big a deal what with shoot/run and mc/tank hunter orders by the time the mech hits the enemy line.

I've had pretty good success against tau by footslogging lots of camo vets behind platoon squads (I keep them in 10s for this as tau are forced to overkill units.. Surprisingly wasting a lot of power)
The idea was to force them to
A use up marker lights to get the vets
B use up firepower to kill the weak unit 1st meaning more plasma gets in closer before they die
C try to split the firepower and lights evenly amongst the units to strip them down and make them useless.

My opponent ended up opting for C, which takes a lot of discipline surprisingly but turned out to be the wrong choice.. After killing my tanks etc first there were so many units at low capacity with tau hiding in the back field.. That I ruled the missions.. I accept I got lucky though as one more turn would have left me wiped off the board with a near full tau running amock,
