Does anyone have any advise or experience using smoke/vapor machines in 40k models? I am currently investigating whether it is feasible to place a small smoke machine, similar to the ones they use in model trains, inside my stompa. The stompa has a large hull and it would be ideal to set up tubing to have the smoke come from the smoke stacks. You could drill holes from the hull into the stacks to create a pathway for the smoke to travel.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, this is exactly what I am looking for! i have seen this before but I didn't see how he did this or what the machine looks like. I see he mentions smoke generator for trains. Does anyone know what accessories/tools/pieces I would need to make this. Ie battery, wires, smoke liquid, etc. I've looked at Seuthe and they seem like they know smoke generators. Thanks a lot, great place to start. This would Work perfect in my stompa.

Just search Seuthe smoke generators, which come in a variety if sizes, although it seems to be the batteries that take up the most room. You can get them in the UK from here: http://www.expressmodels.co.uk/acatalog/Seuthe_Smoke_Generators.html

To get around the battery issue I suggest using a A23 battery. Its a super tiny battery but puts out 12v which is needed to run the smoke unit. Not sure on the life span of the battery as Im still working on my smoke belching Knight Titan but Ill let you know how it goes. Seuthe also makes a 3-4v smoker which would require much less power to run it so its power source would fit into a smaller space.

Not to be a debbie downer, but I'd really recommend against this even if it can be done.. At least if you're planning to use the model to actually play.
The 'smoke' which things like this produce tends to be full of chemicals, and given it's going to be at table height people will be breathing it. That's no good for anyone's health.
While it may not really effect many people in that sense, if you were to show up with that at more store I'd have to leave for the duration of your stay and sometime after. With all those chemicals come allergies and reactions, and some people could have their health seriously effected by this very quickly. Hospitalization is even possible in some cases (mine in particular).
Just food for thought. Wanting to go the extra mile to make a cool miniature is wonderful, showing up to your FLGS with a model which could have serious effects on the other visitors health is not so cool. I know I'd be pretty upset if I had to miss out on gaming night or a potential tournament because you brought something like this, and it'd be even worse if I didn't notice it for too long and potentially had to have an emergency visit to my local medical center as a result.

Just because it won't kill you immediately doesn't mean it's good for you. Chemicals effect you long before they literally kill you.
And again, that's speaking nothing of people who are actually allergic to this stuff or have other conditions it could effect.

It's funny cause half the smoker units make water vapor. Plus I think the stench and funk coming off half the guys in a gamin store is more potent and lethal then smoker unit smoke.

Thanks for all the tips. I just got my hands on seuthe 10-14V smoke generator. I will look at the battery you mentioned as finding a battering box and switch is proving difficult. People at Home Depot, the source and canadian tire were no help at all.

You may want to try a Radio Shack (if you have them).
And if youre worried about toxins, you could use vegetable Glycerine as well. Everyone is cramming this in their bodies anyway, and it creates a really nice thick cloud. (Its the main ingredient in my e-liquid for my personal vaporizer.
But don't tell Morganfreeman... Im sure he would school me on the dangers of vaporizers and the banning of such substances..... and earn himself another freckle.

There are about 3 recorded cases of people being allergic to dihydrogen monoxide.
As you didn't pick up on it the first time I will go into more detail. you probably know it by its common name: water.

No radio shack in Canada, they changed their name to The Source which I have checked out. But the store I looked in was rather small so i could try another larger store today. The fact my smoke generator requires 10-14V does it mean I used something like this? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Hold-8-AA-Size-Battery-Holder-Box-12V-Case-With-Cover-ON-OFF-Switch-Wire-Lead-/181340054193?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a38b5a2b1&_uhb=1 It comes with a switch for on off but holds 8 batteries which is a lot. thoughts

For the record, I wasn't referring to smoke machines which simply output water vapor; I imagined he'd be using something which used something more artificial due to reservoir constraints with ones which output pure water. A machine which would use something like this: http://www.partycity.com/product/fog+juice+gallon.do?sortby=ourPicks&size=all&bypass_redirect=1
While that is doubtlessly mostly water, it does have various additives which could prove harmful. Most machines of the desired size would use something other than straight water (in fact most smoke machines use something other than pure water due to damage concerns). That's where it becomes an issue and possibly a health concern for some guys at the FLGS.
EDIT: I'm not trying to rant and rave about polluting our air or destroying the environment. I just wanted to show up and say that, if you showed up at my store with a model which was out-putting fake smoke which was anything beyond water you could easily get from your tap, I'd have to take a vacation from the premises. I wouldn't appreciate that very much, and neither would others who may have my problems. Just food for thought and something to consider, not declarations of pure evil.

Thanks for the advice over and over, noted. Now back on topic I have bought an a23 battery box to use for the smoke generator I got just need a toggle switch I think. Any recommendations on those? Any idea the life of an a23 battery on a 12v smoke generator?

The A23 is a 12v battery meant for use in radios to power the receiver. I honestly have no idea on the life of the battery, though I'd say you should get a few good runs of the smoke machine before draining it. It should depend on how long you are running the smoke for.
I imagine youd only be setting it off to show people at the beginning of a tournament, when judges judge painting and for gaks and giggles at the beginning of each game for a minute or two. A good battery should last two days of use like that.
Ill let you know how mine works when I use it. And any small toggle switch will work fine. Any electronics store will have small switches.

Thanks mikeFox, My battery box will take 7 days to get here. Had to order from ebay in US. The a23 batteries are very small and if this thing works I will be a happy camper. Like you said it would be used as a mere gaks and giggles show. Start of tourney and for limited shows. Nothing more than 10-15 mins at a time I would think. If the battery even lasts that long I'm good. With the hobby shop I went to had a smoke generator for lower volts but this was all they had. PLease let me know and I will be sure to do the same.
Thanks

So I have had a chance to build the smoke connections. unfortunately it didn't go so well. The smoke machine has 2 wires. A yellow wire which goes to the power and a brown wire which is supposed to go to the ground (when used on a model train) I have a A23 battery and box and using connectors I clipped the positive terminal to the brown wire and the negative to the yellow terminal. I added the smoke liquid, put the battery in and the machine let of a light smoke for about 30 seconds and stopped.
Looking at the smoke liquid it looks like it has expired back in 2011 but I am not sure if that is a big deal or not. Needless to say I can't seem to make it work anymore.
The battery got relatively hot but nothing to severe.
Any help or insight would be helpful
Thanks
