I suppose threads like this pop up every week.
Anyway, my take on it is that what's needed is an Imperial civil war. The Inquisition declares the non-Codex marine chapters excommunicate. Hardly a stretch; the Blood Angels have the entire vampires in space thing going, the Space Wolves are werewolves and with the Dark Angels you get the business with Cypher and the Fallen. All painted with the mutants and heretics brush. Just need some catalyst events, perhaps the black rage and red thirst go real bad and civilians end up dead in numbers that just can't be swept under a rug. The Dark Angels do some questionable gak in their crusade against the Fallen and the wolves just... wolf a bit too much. Or rather, Njal and the Rune Priests get into some wacky gak involving the warp and Bjorn just won't go to sleep. So the Inquisition lose their collective gak and whoop-de-doo, Grey Knights on Fenris. Now, Russ returns from the warp with the 13th company and gets into some serious paladin-skewering. Calgar and the Codex-compliant chapters just go by the book and reluctantly support the Inquisition (at least initially) but there is unrest among the marines. The Imperial Guard just don't know what to do and THIS is where Tzeentch whispers "just as planned" in Abaddons ears and all hell breaks lose.

I would love for the story to advance, but not like how you said. All it is, is the Horus Heresy all over again. I am sick and tired of Imperium point of view all the time all the place.
I want to see advancement for other races as well, not just Imperium. Yes, yes, I know 40K is from the Imperium point of view. Thing is, we only have the Imperium point of view, and would LOVE to see another point of view where it shows how evil and bad the Imperium actually is.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I don't mind a bit of staticness, it'd be nice to see things move forward but there's a lot of ground in the current timeline to cover. I mean it's better that then massive changes with every new novel, often killing off entire factions.

After Forgeworld completes the Horus Heresy series (30k), I wonder if they will try their hand at creating "50k".

Did Fulgrim Just Behead Ferrus?

I think what I would really like from Forgeworld might be some books for other time periods in between 30K and 40K. Imagine if Forgeworld decided to redo the Eye of Terror campaign with a couple of really big books like the HH books? Or if they did the Age of Apostasy?

Spawn of Chaos

All of the races create bigger and bigger war machines. Ultra-riptides, Wraithkings, Supa Rocks (essentially giant boulders that roll over the enemies). These war machines are so large they create their own gravity wells, wreaking havoc with local baseball games. Then, they build war machines even bigger! Super-Mega-Ultra-Riptides, Wraithgods, Titan Class Titans (Titans so big they make regular titans look like dreadnaughts.) Then they magically find out how to make Terminator 2 armor. Armor so dense the planet could explode and the wearer would still get an armor save. (0+ armor save that can be re-rolled eight times, but -1 to their run roll.) Then tragedy hits, the races simultaneously build war machines so huge, with such dense materials that they collapse in upon themselves, creating a black hole. Planets everywhere get sucked into these new black holes and all technology becomes lost, leading to a new age of darkness where people find themselves fighting with slings and bows. A new king emerges, and that king is the humble Lasgun. Those soldiers who manage to acquire this most rare and relatively powerful weapon laugh as they blast their foes apart in only nine or ten shots, rather than the 20 or 30 shots it would take with a sling. As once man coveted plasma guns and terminator armor, technologies lost to them, now so do they covet the lasgun. Whole squads of warriors have been known to cry "Oh save us! That enemy squad is equipped with.... lasguns! Run!!!" Rumor has it there is still a working heavy stubber lost somewhere on the planet of Heuristic 1. To control such a weapon would liken it's owner to a god, but so far no one has been able to jump on a trampoline high enough to actually enter orbit and attempt space travel. That is good, for if someone ever did find that weapon...........

Homicidal Veteran Blood Angel Assault Marine

If GW decided to advance the storyline, Abaddon might finally actually succeed on a crusade.
And let's face it, unless Emperor and/or big bunch of Primarchs wake up, the Imperium is kind of doomed.
Unless Ultramarines save the entire Imperium with their heroic stand against 10,000 Chaos Marines or IG will magically find 200 Baneblades with a half-burnt cigar on top of one, they just don't have enough people to actually stop these little things like Chaos gods hanging around and Tyranids lurking for some food.
I don't want to say this but the only hope for the galaxy itself is Tau. They are the only people who could actually unite different races to the fight against Chaos (because Eldar are too suspicious about the rest and Imperium too xenophobic/stubborn/slowed).
Communism is the way!
Oh, and they are the ones with enough balls to just burn a couple of sectors so that 'nids won't eat.
