After deciding to start 40 last month, this question has been constantly troubling me. Which army should I play? I've heard many suggestions, what do you think looks cool? What play style do you like? Even after applying these guidelines, I'm left with multiple armies. I'm a beginning painter so I thought Necrons would be good, but their fluff is so boring. I find the Space Wolves fluff to be awesome, but they seem more difficult to paint. This might seem too picky, but I'm about to invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars on the army. Any suggestions for this indecisive wreck of a gamer?

Still unsure what army to choose

Mate, I appreciate you're new, but we don't need three threads for what is essentially the same topic.

Probably best to bump a thread if it hasn't been stale for too long if you wish to redirect the conversation, rather than start a whole new, but ultimately very similar, chat.

But we need more 'favourite Primarch', 'pick my army' and 'is forge world legal' threads! How dare you deprive me

It is true, Forgeworld legality threads have been particularly scarce recently...

I love the Necron fluff. Just curious what do you find so boring? For Necrons you can basically say anything about them. Want them to be the good guys. Band they are. Something went wrong with their programming changed their behaviour and now they are not your normal Necrons but good.

Can't really say that now for Space Marines. Necrons have more variety than SM because you need to stick within the guidelines for SM.

So what fluff do you like? Don't worry about painting. I have waited over 10 years for my painting skills to improve and quit each time something doesn't turn out. Now I don't care how ugly they are, I want to finish what I started over 10 years ago.

So love Space Wolves fluff? Think it's Awesome? Start them. That will motivate you into making and painting them. For you Necrons are boring. So you will not be motivated to do them.

Since you only mentioned Necrons and Space Wolves, I would say start a small SW force.

As I ask anyone, what kind of player are you? Shooty? Assaulty? Mass hordes or small few elite's? Maybe a combination of all of them?

Want to play for fluff? To win? To have fun?

As I said, I would start what you think is Awesome, and not worry about your painting skills. Otherwise you will never finish anything and never be satisfied.

There was one in general about 2 days ago regarding Forge World models.

I feel this thread is different. In the first, I wanted information on all the armies. In this thread, I have narrowed it down to a more specific subject matter-Space Wolves and Necrons.

Can I get some actual advice, or did I just set myself up?

Not from me, as I think asking complete strangers on the Internet for advice of what you've already acknowledged is an important and very personal decision is a flawed concept in the first instance.

What I will say is that your first choice is unlikely to be "the one" as it seldom is for for most gamers and that in this, as with most decisions in life, you've probably already made your mind up, and are now looking for reasons to doubt yourself.

I'd say for someone diving in right now, thoroughly decide what you want from the game. Cool models? Doesn't matter. Want a competing chance? Stay away from books that aren't in hardback yet and certain builds in books like Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines. Want to compete? You're looking at Eldar, Space Marines, Tau, Chaos Daemons, and Necrons.

Blend those ideas until you filter out the armies you think you'd enjoy looking at for years.

Eldar and Space Marines are both "darling" forces from my experience. Space Marines are always mid-to-top tier in gameplay and you can run them with different flavors (Marines, Wolves, Blood, Dark, etc.). The FW team has a hard-on for Eldar and most of their stuff is really damn good. Allying with Dark Eldar can make a truly hateful list and give you loads of flavor in terms of painting.

That's my $0.02.

See the above threads... locking as a (second) duplicate.
