Here's the deal.

Currently, I am doing an army builder for Orkz and it got me thinking a lot about competitive play.

I want to start an army project after this one for 1850 tournament only play.

The "local meta" is 1-2 Flyers with Riptides or some kind of long range "shooty-type" armies with MCs and Blast templates.

Near no one plays horde armies, and if they do it's usually with mech support. (Trukk Boy Spam etc)

-------------------------------------------

I would like to know what the most competitive armies and lists have in common and why?

What makes riptide spam so good?

More Importantly, What is a good counter for it? Poison weapon spam? Low AP Spam?

What armies have either of those things? Are they competitive? etc

-------------------------------------------

The only armies I am overly farmiliar with are Space Marines and Orkz with some Tau.

But, I am willing to build any kind of army in the next army builder.

Riptide spam is so good cause they're tough, shooty and mobile. That's what generally makes competitive lists. Mobility, hardiness, shootiness/choppiness+even more toughness and mobility. And that's exactly why stuff like footslogging hordes don't work. They're not hardy enough and are too slow.

I think all lists need to base around three things:
1. Durability

2. Speed

3. Firepower

I think lists that have at least two of these can do well in a competative environment. For example I run three list at the moment they're Serpent spam, iron hands and spawn and maulerfiend spam chaos.

Of all of these lists the serpent spam with two wraithknights is best as it has all three of the above requirements. Whereas my iron hands don't have mobility and my spawn spam doesn't have firepower.

Also important to know that they are generally viewed as extremely undercosted, considering what you get with a Riptide.
