Netanyahu calls for immediate U.S.-Al Qaeda ceasefire

Here’s a transcript of Netanyahu’s remarks yesterday: “As I’ve said many times, the United States has a right to defend itself against terrorist attacks from Al Qaeda. And as a result of its war in Afghanistan, and drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen, the United States has already done significant damage to Al Qaeda’s infrastructure. I’ve also said, however, that we have serious concerns about the rising number civilian deaths from drone strikes and the potential loss of American lives from terrorism. And that is why it now has to be our focus and the focus of the international community to bring about a cease-fire that ends the fighting and that can stop the deaths of innocent civilians.”

Admittedly, it seems strange for Netanyahu to be shedding what may appear to be crocodile tears over civilian casualties, but given that Hamas actually attacked and continued to attack Israel, it’s not nearly as hypocritical as if the United States, having killed or participated with Nato in the killing of thousands of civilians in Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, and Yemen, was doing the same.

He does have a point though. I'd hate to think of our reaction if another state started lobbing missiles into our borders willy-nilly. Obama would probably wait a month then cut off their supply of paperclips or something.

I still wonder if this isn't a joke on the part of the WP author. The only references I can find to it are citing his article. But there's nothing to indicate it's a parody or joke.

While he's not wrong, I fail to see what biting the hand that feeds you is supposed to do for him. Either that or he's trying to rile up internal US opposition to the current administration, in which case that's low, interfering with the internal politics of your biggest ally.

See, at this point I'd like to make some kind of joke about how Israel spied on the US with a link to Jonathan Pollard, but after the Snowden stuff came out, I don't think we have the moral high ground on that one anymore.

I suppose I can at least point out that it's pretty hard to call Israel a US ally with a straight face. With how little they have ever brought to the table for us, that they see us as a cow to be milked publicly and mocked privately would not be surprising.

Wasn't Israel given unfiltered access to NSA findings and information? I remember reading something along those lines awhile back, but now I can't remember what it was exactly.

UPDATE: Come on, folks. Of course Netanyahu isn’t going to say this, even though he’d be be making a sound point about the American government’s hypocrisy if he did. And if you had any doubt, the link in the post links to Obama’s ceasefire remarks, which are virtually the same as the remarks I attributed to Netanyahu, with just the names switched. But since this seems to be gaining some momentum on social media as an actual event, I’m adding a disclaimer.

So it wasn't Netanyahu trolling the U.S., just Bernstein trolling the Post's readership.

And yes, I totally see Netanyahu saying this, Israel's sense of entitlement and self-righteousness knows no limits.

And Bernstein should be fired, but apparently he just blogs on the Post, probably for free, if so he should be banned.
