Hi there,

I'm new to the Ork Codex and was wondering how the "zoink" effect from the SAG works regarding locked in combat.

5,5 Zoink! No shot is fired. Immediately place the Mek in base contact with the closest model or point on the target unit, and treat them as being locked in combat

1- Does this allow for Overwatch from the target unit?
2- Are there attack rolls to be made (e.g. roll to hit and to wound?)
3- Does nothing happen but the Mek and his unit are just locked in combat this turn and the to hit & wound rolls are made in the next turn?

I have no idea how to read and use this rule, so all help is welcome

1) The unit didn't charge so no
2) In the assault phase there is because you resolve combats there
3) Next assault phase but yes

1) No, it is not a charge. Also means no charge benefits for the mek. Same kinda thing happens if you ram a Walker and get stuck on it, the walker punches it in the assault phase but without any charge benefits or overwatch.

2) You would think it would cause some form of damage, but as it is written no damage is done.

3) Its just the mek that gets thrown across the board. His unit is left behind. That would be comical to stick him in a unit of MANz and hope for ZOINK! to get the MANz across the table lol.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Ok, thanks for answering guys.
A short summary:
- so no overwatch
- only the mek is locked in combat
- but i'm still not clear on the combat phase, will there be attacks dealt yes or no?

here's an interesting one:

if a mek on a bike with a SAG (so he's relentless) is in a unit, and he fires at an enemy unit that's 1" away, and "Zoink"s into them, but is still in coherency with his unit, does the unit become engaged as well? in order to seperate from a unit he has to finish more than 2" away, so whould this be a way to get lucky and get a bike squad into combat with no overwatch?

also, if the mek fires at a unit, then zoinks, can the unit he was in assault, as there's no models in it that fired a heavy weapon...?

for A) yes probably an easy way to avoid overwatch, with a 1 in 36 chance.

B) I'm quite sure he still "counts as shooting a heavy weapon". Whatever happens to him...

I suppose so. Be hard to place a Large blast 1" away but in theory if he's still in Coherency he wouldn't leave. The odds of this ever happening though...

The "unit" did fire a Heavy weapon, it doesn't matter that the "model" is no longer there.
And if the Mek is still on his bike as in the last example, they could assault and way due to Relentless.

Well if the Mek Zoink'ed into base contact with a model from an enemy unit, then the enemy unit is considered to be locked in combat and can't Overwatch anyway. So the bikes could charge normally without copping any Overwatch.

You only leave a unit if you break coherency at the end of the movement phase correct? This leads to the bigger issue of since you didn't leave the unit at the end of the movement phase you are still part of the unit if you 'zoink". If this happens and the BM ports across and gets killed in assault does that mean the rest of the unit that was left behind has to take a morale check?

Only if that Mek was >25% of the unit.

Was talking about the assault phase. Mek ports over gets killed in the assault. Unit he was with looses by 2 if he caused no wounds.

It does depend how far he goes though, if he's out of coherency by the end of the movement phase, as you point it out, then he's out of the unit and whatever happens in the ensuing combat phase does not affect his unit.

Mek Zoinks during the Shooting phase, so he can't leave the unit until after the next Assault phase, opponent's entire turn, and then the end of his movement phase.

Ah right, my bad, that does make sense then. So the rest of his unit would be in Close combat? as they are still a unit and 1 of them is locked.

At their initiative step the squad members would move 3" towards the enemy unit, and 3" at the end of the phase, until they reach the unit?

That seems really odd if the MEK targeted a unit at max range doesn't it? But that is how it is written.

Hansisaf,
As long as the Mek survives, then the unit will be in base contact with the enemy and the end of each turn.
Soon as the Mek dies then the Rules for not being able to reach the enemy will trigger, assuming the Unit isn't swept.

That is the bit that makes me laugh the most with the idea of this at max range of the weapon, the picture of the Unit being swept even when they are not close to the enemy themselves.

No Jinx, he's right. In the Ork's next movement phase he would be out of coherency, or did i miss rules in the assault phase saying that doesn't matter?

(Assuming he survives all that)

BlackTalos,
Actually had a curious thought on that very Rule interaction.
I will need to review the Independent Character, Assault and Movement Rules to see if it holds merit.

He'd be out of coherency but can't leave the unit as the unit is locked in assault - IC rules.

Well, you could've quoted the rule to beat me
An Independent Character can leave a unit during the Movement phase by moving out of unit coherency with it. He cannot join or leave during any other phase – once shots are fired or charges are declared, it is too late to join in or duck out!

ohsnap

edit:
Doh, quoted the wrong one. Here you go.
An Independent Character cannot leave a unit while either he or the unit is in Reserves, locked in combat, Falling Back or has Gone to Ground.

Emphasis mine.

The same reason I didn't immediately review the Rule was the same reason I couldn't quote the Rule directly... stupid work-place regulations prevent me from accessing my books.

Got it, so orks moving by 3" steps across the board, completely un-shootable, but you could charge them... Until the Mek dies.

As for the Mek / Big Mek one: Perfectly Orky

*Mek shoots*
~~Zoink~~
"Come bak Boooss~"
*Off they trudge across the board, seeking their trusted leader*
