I was just wondering if you needed to take the detachment in a supplement to be able to use the formations in that supplement? Specifically, I was looking at the Waaaagh! Ghazghkull formations, and was wondering if it is possible to take these formations while using the Ork Horde detachment from the main codex? Thanks!

Formations are separate detachments and, to my knowledge, there is no requirement to take one to access the other.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Ok, just wanted to double check since they are in different books. So any Ork army can take advantage of any of the formations in the Waaagh! Ghazghkull supplement regardless of detachment?

It is possible to have a Battle Forged Armies consisting of nothing but formations, selected from all different source material.

Yes, but the formations come from W!G, so use the special rules and wargear options in that book. Mainly this means you cannot get the Lucky Stikk (formerly carried by Ghazz's assistant Makari) in the W!G warboss-formation.

Also remember W!G's Mob Rule modifications, which affect all the formations found in the book.

Thanks for the answers guys! Are there many sources for formations yet? Maybe a silly question, just got back into 40k, and am trying to learn 7th!

Yes, a number of formations can be bought from black library now, e.g. chaos has some helbrute (aka Drednoughts) slates, Tau have some, as do Eldar, Space Marines etc.

Those would be "Apocalypse Formations", which are for Apocalypse only and not to be confused with "Formations".
