Subject: Which books do I need for most tournaments?

I have the latest Chaos Space Marines codex, and the BRB, but I'm honestly a little confused when it comes to things like Forgeworld, FAQs, Datasheets, Imperial Armor, etc.
For example, I'm thinking of playing in the Beaky Con tournament, and just want to know what books I should know - even if I don't plan on using the units, before attending.
Thank you.

What does the Beaky Con rules state as far as what they are allowing?
It should state on their site.

You need rules for everything you field.

Yes, but as a new-comer to 7th edition, which rules should I READ to familiarize myself with the scene. I haven't played since 3rd ed. so I'm not sure what is commonly accepted.

I'm not specifically talking about only Beaky Con - that's just the one I'm going to attend in a few months, and was curious what tournaments usually allow. Is there a common list, or even a FAQ/Guide to tournaments?

That is completely up to the TO's running the con.
They could use a specific ruleset from for example the Bay Area Open, or they could have their own ruleset.
You need to talk to them and see what they are allowing.

As already stated, you will have to look at the rules for each specific tournament. Other than the main rulebook and codices, anything else is up to the tournament organizers.

You should bring the books for everything you have.
You should read every other codex, supplements, Stronghold assault and Escalation.
That way you have an idea of what other armies can do and what their basic rules say.

I would say every other Codex, Stronghold assault and Escalation. You'd have a pretty good idea with that. Although usually reading a Codex once you miss a lot of special rules and gear that other players may spend more time pondering tactics over. So the best way to "learn" items is questioning your opponent: "What's his load-out?" "What does that do?" Obviously in moderation, and over a few games. 1 games against any army before you go is probably worth reading the Codex 5 times over. [Ed] when asking those questions, ask to see it in their codex. Many of my local opponents would answer: "He has this, does that" and when i then read it, it's not actually supposed to happen... Last one i can remember is the Chaos boon table of +1BS on a squad of havocs, affecting ALL members.

And don't forget to check and see if the tourney has it's own FAQ.

I want to stress out the "in moderation" part. I have seen people asking about everything in the entire enemy army...repeatedly...and it's really, really annoying. At smaller tournaments, it's ok, but at bigger tournaments, you are expected to know at least the basics of each codex. If someone showed up at a tournament with more than 30 participants and started asking about what Gauss and Tesla weapons do, that would just be irritating and annoying to this player's opponents.

Yeah that's why i said in moderation, repeating is never good either.
As for Gauss and Tesla, i'll even admit i confuse which does what. I know what they do but forget the names. Asking more than once (just as reminder) is usually not good conduct.
