I may be stupid, but i have a question about force organization. I've only every really done lists without allies so I didn't really go over that part of the new book and im not home for the next 2 weeks so no access to my book. I thought the way the new rules were written you had to take all allied detachments if you want allies. Am I wrong and do you have to take one combined arms and then allies?

If you go for a battleforged army, you indeed have to take 1 detachement from your primary army and you can take 1 allied detachement for every main detachement you have.

However, you can just go unbound and take whatever you want.

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

You can have allies consisting of either an "allied detachment" (similar to 6th, can't be same faction as primary), or by taking additional combined arms, or other detachments (e.g ork, knights, inquisition, LotD etc), or by taking a formation. Any of these can be the same or different factions to primary (detachment where warlord is, which can be any of the above except allied detachment)

Ally detachment is just another detachment. It is just more limited.

You can take a CAD (the old FOC we know and love) of orks, and another cad of tau ifs you like. They're allies, just without needing an allied detachment.

You can have as many detachments as you like, as you have points for.

Not true. Battle forged can be any number of detachments from different factions. Only limitation really is the specific "allied detachment" detachment can't be same faction as primary. You could have one CAD of Orks, one of AM, one of CSM and one of Grey Knights. Deploying them 12" apart would be a pig, but it would be battle forged, as long as you had a warlord in one of them lol.

Vanished Completely

The only real concern with the Allied Detachment is that it can not contain your Warlord, as it is not allowed to be the Primary Detachment or the same faction as the Primary Detachment. By having the Warlord in a Formation, Combined Arms Detachment, a different Faction and a few other methods, this Restriction can be honored even if the Army contains different Allied Detachments of a rainbow of Factions. Another thing to keep in mind is that Detachment Restrictions are Detachment specific, they do not carry over to other Formation and Detachments, so one can take multiple Combined Arms or Formations from different Factions in a single Battle-Forged Army with ease.

Armies of just Formations can be fun.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
