The payment is being paid by an insurance company not the widow.
Also, Ventura himself use to be a SEAL (although some claim he was onloy a frogman and not a true SEAL, but whatever) He is still an active part of their community. This story greatly damaged his standing in that community.
It also made it hard for him to get follow-up TV/radio gigs since he was now viewed as being a conspiracy theorist AND anti-American. We all know how poisonous that claim can be in today's media.
The guy's reputation was sullied and somehow Dakka wants to blame the victm for winning the court case. Where did I put my bingo card?

Yes, clearly he took the only route to vindication and a restoration of his tarnished image in the eyes of the military community. His declining income was the result of a fairly nonspecific story in a book and not him being a crazy person and being commonly recognized as such.

You do know that the penalty has nothing to do with his declining income right?

I know that his lawyers attested in court in many easily found stories that his income declined because of the story that was told about him. I know he wasn't given money directly for his income having declined, but they hardly have nothing to do with each other.

I'm left wondering what reputation Ventura could have that hasn't already been destroyed by the fact he looks like a homeless version of Benjamin Franklin.

The penalty was not given because Ventura lost money because of the defamation. The penalty was given because Kyle made money that he was not entitled to because of the defamation. It's a difference that is worth noting.

So let's just jump all the way back to when I said

and didn't mention anything about what you are talking about in the first place.

It still has nothing to do with the suit. The suit was about him lying, the award was about him making money of the lie. So your statement about him was irrelevant.
Or is it okay to lie about a guy if he's a crazy person and being commonly recognized as such?

Okay - let's break this down.

I am lampooning the idea that this will somehow make the military community 'like' Ventura... because even if he never said what he was accused of saying, continuing the suit against Kyle's estate has almost universally made Ventura despised by the military community - far more so than he would have been.
Not bringing in anything about 'the penalty', see?

Not even talking about the court case. Simply bringing up a point that his own lawyers made - and I find it silly that Ventura actually believes that the story has hurt his income more than him acting like a crazy person.
Your comment was as relevant to what I said as if you had come in here and said "Yeah, but Predator was still a good movie." Cool, but pretty much unrelated.

Well, being crazy is one thing in the culture, something that is considered cute and funny.
Being anti-American and possibly anti-SEAL does have pretty big consequences, especially in the media industry. You are no longer cute and eccentric. You are now a traitor and a poison.
Tell me you see the difference.

Looks to me like an donkey-cave soldier was caught lying about something and forced to pay for it like the law says he should have. Congrats on the win to Ventura.

Chris Kyles either a lair or a psychopath. I read his book American sniper and he bragged about beating up innocent Americans in bars for practically no reason( he said they knock people out for so much as looking at him the wrong way and he and his friends would purposely try to get the girlfriends and wives of other men just to provoke fights). He brag's about how his seals connections protected him from prosecution and then later goes on to train police officers.
