I like the look of both of them and I really can't decide which one to get? the fire raptor seems to be cheaper point wise but the storm eagle seems more versatile. I was thinking of loading the storm eagle out with las cannons and the typhoon missile launcher.

I'd say the Fire Raptor. The firepower it can put out (and at multiple targets at that) is very much worth it, I think.

Even now that it can't take autocannons(as of imperial armour volume 2nd edition), are the heavy bolters still worth it? it just feels like the str 5 large blasts would do more damage, and it can be kitted to also fight vehicles and other flyers. I am definitely going to proxy one of each in a game and see how they perform for me.

so far my pros/cons list is:

Fire Raptor:
Pros:
Great anti infantry
can fire at 3 separate targets
cheaper(points wise)

cons:
no customization
light vehicle kill only

Storm eagle:
Pros:
Can be kitted out to fight flyers and tanks and infantry
transport capacity

Cons:
Have to land to embark/disembark
top mounted weapons
"absolute swine to put together"

please let me know if you have additions or contradictions to my list.

BOTH they have brilliant synergy together. You can have a big gribbly unit in the storm eagle and the fire raptor following taking some fire and also raining death on your enemies

I run them both and it's a mean combo. Go with auto cannons though IMO

Oh and they are both as bad as each other to put together

I think both is also a good idea. Use the Fireraptor to suppress those units that would put a hurt on the Storm Eagle when it stops to deliver troops.

If only taking one of the two I'd say Fire Raptor because of needing to land the Storm Eagle to disembark troops means you'll either lose the Storm Eagle when you do so, pay for its transport capacity and not use it, or pay for a unit to ride around in it and never use the unit because its not safe to stop.

In the legion rules they can. Can't coment on IA I don't have it.

Ah, i dont have the legion books and those rules arent for standard 40k. the 40k varient used to get autocannons in the experimental rules but that seems to be gone now.

I have played about 10 games with a Storm Eagle. I like it a lot but i have had some troubles with it. The Transport capacity of 20 is very hard to fully use. The only way to really use it to its max, is to load it with 10 Terminators. If you are Black Templar player then maybe a Full strength Crusader squad. It can only hold one squad and it dose not have the special rule the Storm Raven has, to carry jump troops. Also missing is the ability to disembark troops while zooming. If feels like it was made for a different era, back when a Tactical squad could be 20 strong. I tend to end up with a small 5 or 10 man troop choice in it, for late game objective grabbing in it, the extra space going to waste. Another issue i have with it is its lack of a turret weapon. As a zoomer, its tough to get the fixed front weapons to line up. On the up side the 4 HP make it really tough to bring down. Also the Vengeance launcher if used right, can put out a ton of wounds. However being forced to snap fire due to jinking or taking damage, also limits the Vengeance launcher overall usefulness. I do like the ability to hold troops even with the limitations, the flexibility works well the the Astartes on the whole so i will continue to feature it. I do find it a bit over priced but that is OK. its just a game.

They can take auto cannons its in the imperial armor 2 2nd edition FAQ.


I run the fire raptor a lot and it really doesn't do much to be honest, maybe I am not good at using it or something but it under preforms for the points imo.

my gut instinct was fire raptor as most armies that can take a storm eagle can get a storm raven.
