So my twin brother and I play, and we tend to argue, as twins do. Today we started a game, his white scars vs my Dragowing. He got first turn and revealed his objective cards (we were playing the new missions). He got secure 5, and 2 secure 3s. So he left an attack bike back to claim 5, and 3 was in my end so he chose a unit he was going to forgo shooting with and run to get the objective. So he did his movement and went on to shooting. He went down the line shooting his many grav/melta guns, and when he got to the unit he was going to run he shot with them. Now when he ended his shooting phase and was about to pass the turn I reminded him he had forgotten to run the unit. At first he said well since they didn't any cause any wounds he was going to run them, at which point I wouldn't let them as he had shot. He then measures and finds out the bikes were not within the 12" to shoot meltas which both him and I had not measured when he shot, so he then based the fact that he should run because he shot illegally with the meltas and only the 2 bolters he shot were within range. His argument was it would make more sense for him to run then to shoot the 2 bolters, if he was in range with the meltas he said he wouldn't ask to take it back. Now I wouldn't let him take the move back even after him threatening to quit if I didn't, so our game ended before the beginning of my first turn. Now here is my question, he claims he doesn't like playing with me because I am too competitive, I argued the me not letting him shoot and run is not me being too competitive but just me being normal. am I being too competitive? Would you let him take the move back? What is your opinion on this situation?

I would not. His mistake is his mistake. He runs or he shoots. 40K has problems, but the run-or-shoot choice is not one of them.

So you were too competitive when you wanted to play by the rules, but he wasn't when he demanded to get that run move that would get him to the objective?

I might let opponents take back moves in a friendly games if it was a honest mistake, but I'd be much less likely to do so if the opponent was the sort of person who would get mad if I wouldn't let them.

You both should relax, it is just a game.

It's a game. You guys were just playing as brothers, so I think some things should be forgiven.

I probably would have let him make the movement. but then give him a warning, to be on game next time around. there will be no more shenanigan re-dos.

over there

Following basic game mechanics does not make one too competitive. Both your lists seem competitive to me and he is running white scars biker troop spam with khan and drop wolves, he has no right to saw you are too competitive.

Remind him that the rules are the rules and that if he tried to pull that in a pickup game he runs the risk of getting hit with a 1st edition metal dreadnought in a sock. A game only works when you follow the rules, if someone points out to another person that they are not following the rules both parties need to be as cordial or not.

MOST IMPORTANTLY
This guy is your brother, do not let little plastic dudes spoil your relationship, when no one else is there for you he will be, and you should be there for him. My brother is my best friend and I know when I am alone and in a pinch he will come and help and I would do the same for him. Basically, I don't know your relationship with him, but I do know that the bond between brothers is thicker than a bastions walls, do not spoil it over something as, gasp, petty as army men with dice.

Dude when I play with my bro it ends with us in a yelling match of the gods... Like i admit I am to blame as much as him but i poke fun at his fav hero Kaldor draigo aka Mary sue so we usually get very mad at each other.

Now when i win I usually say we have a tie because telling him I won pisses him off.

The point is your bros! Who cares if he makes a mistake let it go. Unless you guys have money on the table or a prize then be as competitive as possible!

Hmm, weird advice.
You are brothers, you should be fighting all the time!
Except when someone fights you brother, than you kick his ass.

Onto the question: I think it's unreasonable for person A to call someone too competitive when person A quits the game because he's not allowed to score a single additional objective in the first turn of a game.

You on the other hand could have said: Fine, for this time I will allow it.
Because in the future you will surely make a mistake and he will forgive you for it.

I say you are right. In a game when I use to play years ago, when I deployed my Tyranids, I somehow deployed my Tyrannofex out of synapse. So of course he failed his Instinct Behavior rule and was stuck for a turn.

My opponent said "just move him the one inch more so he is in synapse, you are new to the game." I replied "thanks, but now that I made a mistake, I will keep it, because I will learn from it and hopefully not forget to do that again."

Big learning experience. So if you keep letting do redo's is your brother, or you ever really going to learn how to play the game properly?

On the other hand though, the game is suppose to be fun. If your brother is one of those people then you could have let it slip. After all this would have been the first time right? Maybe let it slip a second time, but after the 3rd or so time then you have to put your foot down and say NO. Play properly.

I say you were correct, but for a funnsies game you can let some things slip from Time to Time. Not all the time and always in your brothers favour. Just remember one day you will make a mistake and may want to Take a Backsies.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

His mistake. Being good at the game involves not making miustakes as much as it is making the good moves. Sorry charlie but he DID shoot. Cant roll dice, see that you didnt hit and THEN say "okay I ran".

Say no once and he'll know never to ask again. Its a singular point in time that will yiueld years of dividends!

I'll say that the way I play, I'd have let him take the move back. If you're just playing for fun and he obviously just made a mistake, there's no harm. If the game doesn't hang in the balance then just let him have this one. In my gaming group we often let each other take back moves or re-roll dice, especially if we say that we're going to do something and then just forget to do it (declaring a jink before rolling to hit, for example).

You're not wrong, but consider that you lost out on a fun afternoon of gaming over this and decide whether it was worth it or not. If you'd rather play by the rules, strictly, 100%, or not play at all, then you did right. If you miss the fun you could have had by playing the game, well, think about it that way next time.

I wouldn't let him, especially because he's obviously just trying to be sneaky and get the best of both worlds. Playing the game the right way in a casual game is good practice for playing the right way in a more competitive game.

His mistake, he should pay the price for it. I'd be willing to give him one pass, but thats it for the game. Same as if you make a mistake. Trying to run after shooting or trying to assault with rapid fire weapons is obviously a no go.

OP your brother was scting like baby. Dont play with him again until he acknowledges his behavior and apologizes. If you overlook it, he will continue to do stuff like thst - and likely worse to see how far he can take it. Help him straighten out before he becomes a full fledged that guy.

Your brother needs to chill out. Don't let 40k ruin your relationship, but don't let him pout when he jacks up rules. Me and my friend have missed ourselves messing up and long since gotten over it before it even happens, since we both know we are newer players. We pretty much have an agreement at this point that if we forget reserve rolls we take them and anything that would have passed that turn automatically enters next turn.
