It varies greatly for me, as we kinda of jump around a lot in point values depending on if we're prepping for a local RTT or if we're just squaring off. Lately lots of 1850 - 2000 point battles so I'd have to say right now... I think it would be 1500. Just low enough to make it hard to fit too much cheese, but high enough where you can bring some toys.
Somewhere in the 1500-1850 range is my favorite.

Well, generally, its 1500 to 2000 pts, more specifically 1750 to 2000 pts, with a single detachment and allies allowed.

As a BA player, I like at least 2k to 2500 so I get to really build a list, instead of just throwing in troops and an hq and being done like at the 500 mark. Several of our units are horribly over costed, like say, the Sanguinor, but at large point values I can run him for fun and have enough points still spent on worthwhile things that I don't auto lose for bringing that model.

Personally, I like 1850. It allows me to bring every unit I want to, and the games don't take too long.

1500pts is my regular opponent's and my sweetspot, so that's what we tend to go for. Also above that the games tend to drag a little, and we really want to do a game in about 2 hours.

1850 seems an arbitrary number, where'd it come from? An older edition of the rulebook?

You must be new here. 1850 is the standard point value for many national tournaments such as Adepticon, BAO, and NOVA.

Talking of points, anyone have an idea of what GW playtest at?
Armies vary in strength at different points values (500pts favour hordes, for example) so it'd be interesting to know.

I like 1500 point games. It's enough points that you can bring lots of toys, but restrictive enough that you have to be clever with list building. It seems to fill out a 6x4 board fairly well.
Anything between 1250 and 1850 points works okay.
1000 points is quite limiting - we only do this for quick games, or if we get stuck playing on a 4x4 table. Usually play unbound lists.
2000 points is fun if you want to bring all your toys, but doesn't play as smoothly IMO. Since it fills up the board more, it seems easier to concentrate more firepower during shooting phases, which means all your cool toys get focused down. Beyond 2000 points, the game turns into sort of a clusterfeth.
For 2v2, we play 2000 points (1000 points per player, or whatever combination of 2000 points per team if they want to plan their lists in advance). We usually do a combined FOC, so that we're not bringing so many HQ and troops choices.
For 3v3, we play 3000 points on an 8x4 or 10x4 table. Again, 1000 points per player. We usually play with Apocalypse rules (so lists are basically unbound).

1500 is my preferred level (but, my group plays a lot of 2v2s, so we technically have 3000pts per side).
However, I think lower point levels are fine too - especially if someone is starting a new army. If nothing else, it's interesting to see what you keep from your larger army and what you leave out. Sometimes, you find that there are units you don't miss at all.
The only thing I don't like is playing against tourny lists at low point levels (or at high point levels really, but low points tends to exacerbate things). Facing 2 leman russ tanks at 600pts is just dull.
ShaneTB wrote:They said they do it. I can't make comment on what that entails but they do do it.
What it entails is a couple of people picking random units with random gear (using trademark GW super-random-tables), getting drunk, and playing... something (possibly 40k). Usually they spend the next morning trying to remember what actually happened the previous night. After completely failing, they make up a lot of suggestions completely at random in an attempt to convince GW that they did a good job. Examples of notes include:
"Pyrovore still overpowered - please nerf again."
"Wave serpents seem far too weak, maybe knock 50pts of their cost."
"Too many units in codex, please remove some."

I didn't have the old Eldar codex, but I think their base cost is 5 points more expensive now.

I was trying to imply that the cost had initially gone up (to reflect all the new additions), but then been taken down again because of "playtesting".
I guess I could have just written 'their playtesters are crap', but that seemed less amusing (however accurate).

1500 is what I play at. As said above, it's enough so you can still take toys, but not enough so that you can take a ton of toys and spam.
I mean, at 1500 Points, I run (for SM)
At 1850, it magically turns into:
Yikes. I'd hate me for putting that on the table.

I like 2500 and up when I can scratch out the time for it. I like to play with big forces with lots of big guns (on an appropriately sized table) for the sheer hilarity of it all...chances of crazy stuff happening on the board rise significantly when you hit the 2500 mark, in my experience.
I also have great fun and most regularly play 1500-2000 point games.

From my understanding it is from when GW hosted tournaments.
Also, I have heard on a couple podcasts lately that GW "playtests" at 1500 & 2000 Points.
