So my gaming group likes to run narrative campaigns in a variety of game systems, but we've decided to do a 500pt + Character campaign so the couple guys who don't do 40k can join in on the cheap, as it were. Now, I normally play orks, but I thought I'd use this as a chance to buy and paint something other than orks for a bit, but my experience with most list is largely from the other side of the table, so I don't know all the cool characters out there. My personal plan is something Space Marine, maybe Chaos. Though Eldar have a ton of named dudes and I can draw units from my wife's army....but I wanted to ask the dakka hordes:
Excluding the Emperor and Primarchs; Who do you think is the coolest, most badass character in the 40K universe, purely based on fluff?
and/or
If you were building a small army around one character to play under the current rules, who would it be? (All Codexes, Forgeworld included)
I can start the thoughts off: I really love Cypher from a lore perspective, at least in so much as he pisses the DA off and there is nothing they can do about it. As for game play, I've kind of been leaning towards Tyberos the Red Wake, I've been really interested in making a small Carcharodons force. (though Forge World just told me they don't make the transfers anymore).
Feel free to throw your thoughts in here, cheers!

I'd thought about imperial guard, but I am not familar with thier new book at all. Always loved Yarrick (Maybe because all orks love a good foe), but I never got a chance to play with Rambo before they "Squated" him out of the Codex.

I'd have to say Mephiston. He beat the most debilitating and crippling flaw they have and is just a boss. Though Lemartes is up there also since hes all black ragey but can still think. Gaunt is badass also.

According to the 5th edition Tyranid codex, there is a theory that the Tyranids are fleeing from a more fearsome race. This is not true. They are running from Marbo.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

I really like librarians, and I'm a BA fan as well, so I'm gonna have to go with Mephiston. Him leading a handful of his librarians accompanied by some honor guard is a pretty cool image imho.

With Chaos, Tzeench would probably turn your hands, feet and face into
scrotums, complete with appropriate nerve endings. Then Khorne would
force you and all your friends to fight to the death using your new
scrotal appendages. Once they get tired of that, you get tossed to
Slaanesh who <censored by order of the Inquisition>, until you finally
end up in Nurgle's clutches and he uses you as a loofah. |

Mephiston sounds interesting, but no one in our group owns the BA codex. Damn you! I'll have to add him to the list as someone to investigate.

Yup, Ahriman for sure. With the gods against him, he takes arms against his fate. He bows to no power, and appeals to the teenage angst in all of us leftover from our teenage years, screaming feth YOU to the very cosmos!
Plus, magic is super cool

This guy is bad ass. Sadly there isn't that much fluff about him, but I like his one page blurb in the SW codex. I really like how he knows his place, he knows his job, and he does it all exceptionally well.
On the table top, he is beastly. Makes his unit of Wolfguard stubborn and that single unit can be kitted out to do pretty much anything you need it to.

Dudes battlefield accomplishments as a Space Marine are up there with the best of them. As a Chapter Master, he stood up to the bureacracy and BS of the Imperium, and faced the music when it was time. As a Chaos Lord he lives in constant pain, and still kicks major ass wherever he goes.

Castus Grendel. Him, Straken, Yarrick and good old fashioned ollanius pious. Not being a 7 foot tall beast with power armor and fighting anyway despite this is AWESOME. Fighting through enough mortal injuries to get enough bionics to be as tough as the aforementioned 7 foot tall beast is even more awesome. The average guard veteran is twice as brave as a marine and half as attached to reality. That is AWESOME.
I want a straken build, sometimes if i am tired and delusional i will admit regret to not playing catachans.

Commander Dante is hands down for me the most badass. 1,100 years as Chapter Master of the BA, and probably more time served before hand. I love that he leads from the front and can be found where the battle is thickest and most brutal. I really like that he was never the best, nor the most powerful, but always up to the task to get the job done and come out alive. I love his back story and just think he is a general badass.
Close second for me is Imhotekh the Stormlord.

Duke Sliscus and his drugged-up Harem. He let's you roll twice on the drug table and pick your favorite of the two. Think of a pimp who calls himself the Duke and has all of his (b)wyches do the fighting.
But seriously this would be fun and pretty strong. wyches in venoms. All of the splintercannons will take down infantry and the haywire grenades on the wyches will take down vehicles. And Duke isn't awful in CC either. Although he probably won't be as powerful as some other named HQ choices out there. But hopefully your hail of poisoned shots will bring them down before he sullies his hands in close combat.

That was a bit offensive. And is there really any link in the fluff between Sliscus and wyches? From what I read, he is a pirate in exile!
