Hello my fellow daemon worshipers. I had a game this weekend against a SM drop pod army, and I ended up winning in the end, but I did take a lot of casualties that first turn.
I personally haven't had a lot of experience against drop pods in my local meta, so at the time wasn't sure how to deploy my own forces, which mainly consisted of rush units
such as daemonettes, screamers, hounds, and a few grinders. I've been looking up some counter drop pod tactics, but got nothing definitive, so I thought I'd ask.
Cheers, and thanks in advance.

Without know the specifics, I would say that when playing a drop pod player, expect them to come to you. With that in mind, I would have my grinders bubble wrapped so that nothing can drop in inside melta range. Keep you cheap forces surrounding the perimeter, wait for him to drop and then assault him.

Thanks for the comment. Pretty much wat happened, was he dropped in and used flamer spam on me. Guess I need to make a wider bubble with my more delicate units then assault with units in the back.

Grinders have a toughness don't they? Drop Marines are almost a gift. The two things you see come out of drop pods most are heavy flamers (5++ save) and Melta (almost no vehicles). And everything is nicely in charge range for you.

You usually see Melta, Flamers, and Plasma. Heavy Flamers are fairly rare as they only come on one unit.

Soul Grinders are AV13/13/11 walkers. And Meltas will be still be wounding all non-Iron Arm Demon Monstrous Creatures on 2's (except a GUO which it will wound on a 3) and be ignoring any armour saves they might have. 5++ is good, but it doesn't go thaaaat far.

My biggest concern would be the meltas on the grinders. So, I would have my grinders set up (probably) in a corner. I would then layer out each unit in successive waves. My final wave would be about a drop pod away from my inner core of units. Since the drop pod has to have 1" clearance on all sides, this would force him to go outside my bubble. This should also minimize flamer damage to the outside unit.

This would be my cheapest unit (probably daemonettes or horrors). Once they absorbed the damage, it should be game over as all of your assault based daemons take on his space marines.

I take it you dont play Tzeentchian Horror Show? If you are really worried about getting your grinders meltaed how about putting them in reserve?

With love from Denmark
