Hey Guys,
Just got an email from Victrix, including the following pictures of their new republican romans. apparently the kits are going live on their website on sunday:
These are images of the figures included in the command frame. We will be putting 3 command frames and 6 legionary frames in each box to give a total of 60 figures.
Well we reach the first major milestone as we get ready to launch the start of what we envisage being an extensive Punic Wars range. We had the command frame test shots back today and "oh boy" do these look business. Well done to Emel and Steve for their sterling efforts at the design stage where all their hard work has now paid off. Obviously I am biased but these figures are stunning, particularly things like the bearskin and wolf skins. Our tool maker, Simon, who has produced many figure sets for many people, said "that these are the best figures that his company have ever produced".
The Republican Romans in chainmail and the Republican Romans in pectoral armour are now ready to go. I expect stock to start arriving from Monday onwards. Both codes will go live on our website on Sunday night. The Italian Allies will be available in 2-3 weeks time.
Finally Steve will hot foot it back from his weekend break on Sunday and immediately launch himself into finishing off the first sets of Republican Roman shield transfers that LBMS will produce for Victrix. I will post images of these as soon as I have them.
More news will follow.....Julian at Victrix

Is it just me, or do the proportions seem a bit off?

The helmets do seem rather large. Dunno if that's accurate or not, but it does throw the look off.

The plumes are correct length. the italo-corinthian helms are correct as well. as far as helmets being big, generally you would want a bit of room for padding. That is as far as i can comment without digging into my library.

Unfortunately, accurate or not, they surely look off, which is the bigger issue for many collectors/gamers/painters.

Just providing historical insight, no need to be pushy. Although i agree that aesthetics have a bigger pull on gamers. For some though, especially with historicals, accuracy is king.

I think with their greeks, Victrix erred on the side of looking cool rather than being strictly historical, and I like that a lot. These may be accurate, but they look a bit awkward.

For me the awkwardness is not in proportions but the way things join up. Nothing really seems to fit naturally, as in bodies in motion don't look like that. Are these multipart plastic? If so, that's probably what the problem is. Many of the Triarii for example don't look like they're actually ready to thrust their spears, they're just lazily holding them in a position about where they would if they were thrusting, because the rest of the body isn't counterbalanced or braced against the movement. But if the torso is one piece and the thrusting arm is another, then that would basically be impossible to make unless the sculptor designed a "thrusting torso" to go with the "thrusting arm" which undermines the whole point in multiparts in the first place. If they aren't multipart, then I've got nothing. I should say though that if these were reasonably priced and I was in the market for a couple of Republican Roman units then I'd overlook that awkward posing and snatch them up in an instant. They're still quite nice.

1. Yes they are multipart
2. most of the figures in the 2nd picture depict Principes armed with Pilum, i see maybe two triarii with their spears held in a relaxed stance.
