Hi there

I've only play a few games and recently I've noticed how much trouble (ie I can't do it) I have taking down my opponents Dreadnought. I play Tau and my heaviest weapon is the Broadside TW Heavy Rail with a S of 8. Unless we have totally misinterpreted the rules for taking down vehicles (the Dread is technically the only vehicle either of us have), I can't down this thing unless I get very very lucky. I don't mind working for a victory but it was clear that the game would continue for a long time with me with most of my army chasing this lumbering block around the board!

Is the answer simply to get a bigger gun, probably on a vehicle, for myself?

Or are there tactics I am missing? I really don't know much *at all* about Dreads.

On the + side, the dread seemed to do very little actual damage to me...

thank you, all.

A railgun has S8 and AP1 if I recall, meaning that against most Dreads you will penetrate the armour on a 5+ or glance on a 4. Considering you'll need at most 3 pens or glances to kill it, that shouldn't be too hard if it's the only vehicle he has. Be sure to target it as a priority with the railgun, as to shoot that at infantry is a waste anyway.

With the range of the railgun, you should be able to hit the dread from turn one, so just keep shooting and it will go down. Don't waste the rest of your army on it, use them to kill his other stuff

If you want something new, try a Riptide, fusion gun crisis suits or a Hammerhead with a Rail Cannon.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, maybe the dice were just unlucky for me, I didn't get a single glancing shot with two BS's all game :(

Sounds like you were dead unlucky, then. With BS4 and S8, you should be glancing every 3 shots or so.

Yeah, bad luck happens. Welcome to Warhammer Bring more guns! Dreadnoughts aren't THAT big of a threat unless you are playing low point games, which I feel is the case here.

Yeah, bad dice for you.

Couple ways to deal with it:

get rear armor hits with your FWs, glance on 5s and pen on 6s. if it's small points FWs should be a big part of your army anyway. You could also upgrade a FW squad with emp grenades, very dangerous but it is viable and does work. Positioning is going to be how you take out the dreadnaught, try and lure it into a trap where it exposes it's side/rear to one of your high dakka units. Weight of shots usually wins in the end!

BS3, unless I remember incorrectly. Tau shooting.

Slot in a Battlesuit Commander with the Puretide Engram Nanochip to confer Tank Hunters to the Broadsides. Should make life easier.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.
