Dad was one of the first motorcycle road racers. Kind of grew up in the pit. Coming in nice and slow during preps before a race and some lady stepped out in front of him. Layed out the bike and he broke his collarbone in two places.

There was no disorientation on the part of the guy that got hit.
He gets out of the car and you can see him seeking out Tony...he even avoids the car before Tony...and he is shaking his fist in anger.
He may have had brain damage but it wasn't from the wreck.

I blame the media for spinning this way out of proportion, the victim ignored safety protocol, it was an accident as far as i could see.

I read a few articles in the news and sports magazines that talked about getting out of the car being a fairly common occurrence and that was sometimes used as marketing like fighting was in Hockey. There were lots of examples given over the last few years of people getting out of their cars in such a manner so I am not sure where the "never get out of your car" comes from if it is actually something that happens somewhat frequently.

I've been to quite a few dirt races like this one(I live 10 minutes from a local dirt track), and I've never seen anyone get out of their car like this. It's completely unsafe. I was shocked to see it.

A stupid act repeated frequently by many people is still stupid.

I agree, but apparently it isn't an entirely unprecedented occurrence. I think the USA Today article was about how NASCAR may make rules about getting out of the car due to this incident, which surprised me that there weren't already rules in place to curtail it.

Honestly I was just referencing Interstate '76.
